Kidney stones, are HELL. What do kidney stones look like? Kidney stones may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a pearl. Some stones are even as big as golf balls. Stones may be smooth or jagged. They are usually yellow or brown. Have an enemy? Wish for them to get kidney stones. Makes you tired all the time, can't sleep for the pain, don't laugh because it hurts to much, generally makes your life very poor. For those who don't know about such things, here are some links. http://www.kidney.org/atoz/atozTopic.cfm?topic=13 http://www.herringlab.com/photos/ http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/kidneystones.html http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/stones_ez/index.htm My last stone was 10mm and shaped like a sand burr. ![]() ![]() |

I shudder to think, mine was so small I lost it, never did find out what it was, and I was out of commission with it!
A kidney stone, of whatever size, will drop a strong man to the floor, pronto. One tends to loose one's concentration..... I will gladly go the rest of eternity without another one. Peter

Sorry to hear Whunter.
I haven't had any but my wife has and a close friend of ours did too. Her doctor suggested to drink cranberry juice. It reduces the chance of getting them back. Feel better soon. Louis. |

Thank you
Hello mb123mercedes = Louis
Can't drink cranberry juice, allergic reaction. The stuff turns off the faucet and causes other issues. I stick with mass consumption of water, 1.75 gallons per day.

Strange how a product can cure one thing
and cause different problems at the same time. I guess you can't win. Louis. |

Feel, experience and training will cause such variable results.
Gasoline mechanics tend to go tight = just manage to force the feeler gauge into the gap. I have seen many gasoline mechanics adjust valve clearance dry = no oil, bad even on gassers, very bad on diesels, it gives a false feel to the gap. The oil is critical. I had an old German mechanic - tool maker teach me the correct way to set the valve lash on a diesel. ![]() Done properly it is part art and part skill. It took me five days to learn and three weeks to convince him that I had learned how to do it correctly, every time. ![]() Loosen only the adjuster you are focused on now. Lubricate the entire rocker, with special attention to the lash gap. Lubricate the feeler gauge, every time, before you slide it into the gap. If it binds, scrubs or catches, it is too tight or you are handling the gauge wrong. Lubricate the feeler gauge, every time, before you slide it into the gap. Complete all valves, reassemble, and take for a five mile normal drive. Park it for 24 hours. Open the valve cover. Lubricate the feeler gauge, every time, before you slide it into the gap. Recheck every valve again. Lubricate the feeler gauge, every time, before you slide it into the gap. Do not be surprised if one or two valves have tightened up again. Lubricate the feeler gauge, every time, before you slide it into the gap. Readjust any tight valves to be just a fraction looser than the other valves. Try it this way as a DIY. Do not expect anyone at a modern garage to follow this procedure. Remember: Lubricate the feeler gauge, every time, before you slide it into the gap. Note: Never adjust valves with sunshine on the engine head. Last edited by whunter; 08-06-2005 at 11:46 PM. |

That is quite the procedure, Roy. Very impressive. Clearly shows that a quick job that is "close enough" and done without the prescribed care can result in widely varying lash.
For a person who has never done valves before on a 617, what would be typical results measured after 24 hours? Opinions? |

I've adjusted the valves 3 times in basically a month, trying to solve my problem and double-check my work. The adjustments did not change within a thousand mile or so. I set them where there was resistance on the feeler gauge. The third time I checked them they were still the same. I have since loosened them up via yalls advise. Still won't idle and smokes like a train.
I've been reading the injector thread by Coach Geo, and the IP stuff is still over my head at this point. I hope that is not my problem, but I'm running out of alternatives. Jimmy

Did you try removing the Radiator cap temporarily to see if it makes a difference?

Bad fuel?
First, I would completely drain the fuel tank and put in 5 gal of diesel from a reliable source. Dump in some Power Service and then go drive the snot out of that wagon. Lots of 0-60 maximum performance accelerations, long hills at WOT...if it's not any better after that, I'd be looking for a diesel injection shop to do a pop test on those injectors.
What does that smoke smell like? If it's Pepe' Le Pu, you're burning oil and you either have a broken ring, bad valve guide or a cracked piston. If it's a diesel spilled on the ground smell, you have a bad injector.
