oil leak

i have an oil leak in the engine rear main bearing oil seal and am planning to change oil to amsoil synthetic oil; i also know that synthetic oil will find any leak and leak more. i have been told that i would have to either pull the transmission or drop the crank: anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
