oil leak

i have an oil leak in the engine rear main bearing oil seal and am planning to change oil to amsoil synthetic oil; i also know that synthetic oil will find any leak and leak more. i have been told that i would have to either pull the transmission or drop the crank: anyone know of a cheaper alternative?

Wonder what kind of car it is?
If it is a 616 or 617 you have to pull the crank to replace the rear seal. Most other cars have a conventional oil seal that is pretty easy to replace once the transmission is out of the way.

Dont know what engine you have either, assuming it is a Benz, you should not need to pull the crank on some MBs, assuming again that you mean to remove the crankshaft.

Rear main seals on many MBs are designed to be replaced without pulling the crank, but yes you will need to separate engine from tranny, whichever is less labor intensive.

It would be more helpful for people to be able to help you more if you be more descriptive. We have some of the best MB specialist here on this forum!

Respectively........Steve............

I have replaced a rear oil seal on my 617 engine, believe me, you have to split the engine case and pull the crankshaft. Although I was able to pull the main caps and lift the crank out enough to get the old seal out and a new one in.
Long and difficult job. Takes about 30 hrs of hard labor, you cannot do it this with the engine in place. The 617 rear seals have a pin going down into the top half and another pin going up into the bottom half of the main seal. It is not possible to slide another seal in there without splitting the upper and lower engine case and lifting up the crankshaft.
