W124 Electrical Gremlins
I have a couple of electrical gremlins in the 1991 300D that I am trying to track down. I have searched the archives and haven't come up with anything.
1 - Radio turns itself on an off. Intermittent. This happens both when the car is running and when it is sitting in the garage. The other night I went out to the garage and the power antenna was going up and down, radio was turning on and off, and the fasten seatbelt light was going on and off. 2 - Occasionally the tachometer will stop working and the ABS light will come on. Intermittent. Usually goes back to normal after a minute or two. Both problems are unpredictable, but happen often. Has anyone run into this? Thanks in advance! Fred |

Fred:
Replace the OverVoltage Protection relay (OVP) -- that's why the tach is dropping out. Check the fuses too, you may have one that is cracked and intermittantly loosing contact. This will cure rought idle and some stalling problems if you have them, too. Pull the radio and make sure all the wires are on right -- you can get power backfeed through the antenna motor, I think, so that if the power wire is actually off the radio, it will work with the key off -- if the power wire is loose, it might make intermittant contact. Peter
