Another 87 300D

Not my car, but just spreading the word

The head looks rather clean compared to the valve cover, perhaps new head?

Very interesting! If you look closely at the vacuum hose comming from the intake manifold it branches out with a tee, one going to the ALDA switchover and the other running over in the direction of the other switchover, or something over there! It's not supposed to!

Also, it couldn't belong to anyone here, could it? It's still hooked up to the EGR!

If it had a new head, I'm very sure they would have mentioned that as that would be a huge plus, but they did not mention such.

I'm always leary of a repainted car! Buying this car sight-unseen may prove to be someones horror story later on in life!

Looked ok to me except the already mentioned stuff.
The head does look different and that seems to be a common problem so maybe it has been replaced and the dealer is not aware of it. He's not aware of the plumbing problems so maybe he overlooked the head too.

Seller has a couple bad feedbacks as well. Had a few motor problems...

Cheers,

Bill

Dang, that's a keen eye! Looks like they reversed the connections at the intake manifold and ALDA.

Hard to imagine anyone would pay to put a new head on that sled.

This car does not look like mine under the hood. The turbo on my car is surrounded by a big metal shield. This one doesn't even look like it has a turbo compared to mine.

Mike:

Should look different, the 87 300D is a W124 chassis, not a W123, and it has a different engine OM 603 vs OM617 (and six cylinders, too).

I don't remember the hose routing off the top of my head, but it is possible the line goes to the ALDA first, then the switchover valve and then the transmission vac amplifier, it will vent off the pressure that way as well.

PSFRED,
Sorry to confuse...I have not updated my car listing in a few months. I am now the proud owner of an '87 300D. My '85 has been decomissioned and is being parted out. I was in an accident with her a few months ago and the insurance company totaled her.

I truly like my '87. It has much more power than my 123's. I love the fuel milage on long trips. It is a very comfortable car as well...the seats are much more comfortable compared to the 123's.

Mike:

If you have a big footballish thing on the passenger side with a heat sheild, you still have the trap oxidizer installed! Replacement is an insulated exhaust pipe about 3" diameter from the rear of the manifold to the turbo, which is now visible (pretty much hidden by the trap oxidizer). If you still have the trap on there, DO NOT dissable the air recirc or EGR until you get it replaced by MB.

I am still learning about the 124's since this is the first one I have owned. Do I want to get rid of the "football"? If so, is this something I can do myself? You mentioned MB, and I like to avoid the dealer like the plague. I have done some reading about these cars, but am still confused about a few things. I am good at working on the 123's but without a Haynes manual for this one, I am getting all of my knowledge from this board. What all do I need to do to this car?

NO NO! you don't want to avoid the dealer on this one since i think they are the only ones certified to do the job. Its a good thing, they remove the old "evil" , trap and replace it with the new one, AND some people said they even get a new turbo. I'm pretty sure this recall is still standing since it is emissions related. Perhaps you can contact your nearest dealer just to make sure?

The elbow that replaces the trap oxidizer is a $500 part (or was 3 years ago) so at least see what the dealer will do for you.

Go to the dealer you get a whole bunch of free parts and free food. It is a recall so they have to do it.

congrats to sublettm, the '87 is a fantastic automobile.
I bought my '87 300DT from the PO who had factory replace the TO under recall, at the same time they installed a complete new exhaust system. I saw the invoice (no charge but it listed what the normal charges would be for the work, over a thousand $. It was my understanding that they installed a type of catalytic converter, its there I can attest to that, but I do not know if they were used with the Trap or not. I am sure some other more knowledgeable members will comment on that. I always wondered if some of the sound the car makes is due to the cat. At times I like the sound, at other times I miss the quietness of the engine in the 123 300D (I can always enjoy that as we still have 3 of them in the family.
While at the dealer, ask them to check your VIN# from historical files, there might be something of interest.
BTW I didn't see how many miles you have on your '87, but if your key is worn, or the tumbler in the dash is starting to get sticky you will need the dealer to get a factory code cut key or tumbler (you can always carry it to your favorite indy for installation). The reason I say this is because the PO of my car had a situation where the key wouldn't start the car and it got towed to the stealership for replacement, I saw the bill I think it was pretty bad what they charged him. good luck with getting rid of the "football"!
