noise at rear wheel/rear axle

I started driving the 230CE, which is basically a 300CD with a 4cyl gas engine, more often and it developed a loud hum at the rear left wheel. The sound is very similar to one you would make when blowing into a bottle but much louder. It isn't constant but it is occuring more often. It seems to go away when I apply the brakes but returns soon after. At first I thought it might be a sticky caliper and I cleaned the caliper and reinstalled the pads but the sound came back after driving it a while again.
It's occuring at most speeds now especially while turning left and lessens on right turns.
Any ideas?

Wheel bearings
Make sure it is not the center differential. Have someone drive the car while your in the passenger seat. If it seems like its now coming from the right tire, it could be the differential. If its not just as loud then it is the left wheel. I would think bearings by your description. Now you do have bearings in the axels so make sure it is the wheel bearings before you take things apart and buy stuff

I agree, wheel bearing or CV joint bad, R&R ASAP.

If you are sure that you have applied the brakes to make the noise disappear (not just let up off the gas), then it most certainly is a wheel bearing. The brakes will load up the bearing in a different manner and will change its sound.
A problem in the differential will not be affected by braking, however, it can be affected by changes in torque as governed by the gas pedal .

p.s: Man, did that feel good, PEH.
