manual or auto tranny??

Is the manual transmission better than auto tranny on a 240D. What are the pros, cons etc. Which one is better fuel mileage? Which one lasts longest? I just bought a 1982 240D with manual transmission and was wondering about this. Thanks in advance!!

240d

If you don't mind the shifting the manual is much better than the 3 speed automatic..better fuel mileage and power especially in the hills....the 3 speed automatic is a real dog and at 70 miles an hour you would think it is ready to go to the big car lot in the sky...Just my thoughts...the valve of your manual transmission also makes your car more valuable and more in demand...

Doing a quick search on this forum should be sufficient to make yourself happy with your purchase.

Does a '79 model W123 have a 3-speed auto? I was thinking it would have the same 722.XXX (4-speed) auto tranny as later models.
