How do the 97 E300D headlight wipers/washers work?

How do the 97 E300D headlight wipers/washers work? I push the button and nothing happens. I have no manual and am hunting one down. Does anyone know if the 96, 97, 98 or 99 year manuals would be near the same? Thanks!.. Indy

Did you try activating your wipers with the headlights on? Reading your question I had to think how mine work . . .

A 97 is a 210 chassis, they don't have headlight wipers, just the spray system (HCS).
There is a rocker switch in the center-dash area, should work any time.

Yeah that is why I put wipers/washers I wasn't sure what they were or how they worked. I push the button what mechanically is supposed to happen? is there a sprayer that comes out? Nothing happens now or are the headlights supposed to be on? Thanks!.. Indy

On the 210's I don't believe the headlights need to be on, but try it.
Below the headlights there are small trapezoidal (?) shaped doors= /_\. These come out due to washer solvent pressure from the HCS washer pump and spray washer solvent over the headlamps, at a pretty respectable force, probably better for washing away dirt and salt (and ice/snow/slush) rather than bugs tho. No electrical connection to these nozzles, only the PUMP is electric, the nozzles open only due to pressure from the pump!
If you are activating the system and you don't hear the HCS washer pump engaging, possibly it's a bad pump, that'd be my first guess. make sure there is solvent in the tank tho, it's the same tank the windshield washer pump uses, both in the same tank. That second tank you have piggy-backed onto the main tank is just extra capacity, feeds into the main tank (usually if you have the HCS, you have that second tank).

What is needed to retro this system to a w210 that didn't have this as a factory option installed with the car?

I'd just leave it inoperative, I don't know what you'd gain by trying to eliminate the whole system. If you don't like the nozzles being there, you could replace the panels under the headlights with non-HCS versions, so outside cosmetics would be the same as if you didn't have it. To carry it further you could order the center dash panel (wood trim=$$$) for a version without that switch cut-out.

Yes, it gets involved if you REALLY wanted to make it look like it never had it, like I said the wooden trim would need to be replaced to get rid of the cut-out for the switch, and the washer tank is different, and the trim under the headlights are different, then remove the washer nozzles and hoses. Still wouldn't be perfect though.

I want to have it. I already have the wooden panel with the cutouts... And am curious to what is required in order to make that function on my w210. I am aware of the panels underneath the headlamps, houses, additional motor that feeds the water from the reservoir and the rubber hoses. Is there a control module as well? I would assume so and that it would be connected with the switch?

Ohhhhhhhh, that's DIFFERENT!!!
Um, but probably harder. Yeah, I'm not sure hw much of the required wiring is present. Look around the washer tank and see if you can spot another electrical connector (2 wires) that would plug into a washer pump. Then I guess i made it clear you'd need a hole for the activation switch; you say you HAVE the extra cut-out? How?
Then the trim for below the headlights, the nozzles and covers, the hoses (which are quite large in diameter), you MAY be able to use your original tank with a new hole drilled for the second pump. Main hangup would be the wiring, if it isn't there I'd forget it. There may be another component involved in getting it all to work, without seeing a wiring diagram I can't say with any great confidence.
