Thumbs up Ideal axle ratio for 300 swap into 240D?

It was brought to my attention a 300 swap into a 240D I'm looking at is fairly easy. So I'd probably want lower axle ratio to go with it.

I found this:

230,240D RATIO 3.69:1
280E RATIO 3.58:1
300D RATIO 3.46:1
300DT 85 RATIO 2.88:1
300DT TO 84 RATIO 3.07:1

So what's going to be best?

Question More data needed.

Are you swapping engine only?

If you swap 300 engine and transmission, use the 300 differential.

If you are talking a 300 Turbo, the 3.07 is the most plentiful of the two ratios that are most compatible with that engine. However if you were thinking N/A 300, then the best bet would be the 3.46 that should go with that engine. There was some talk about ratios recently, and most finally agreed that 240's and NA 300's don't readily support ratios other than the factory applied ones. The 300-DT's have two available, but there is not a lot of difference between them. The existing 240 ratio would not be a real good candidate for either 300 engine.

This one is too far away to do you any good but is an example of what is out there.

If you go to this auction and click the category, parts cars, then search for mercedes diesel, there are always a few. Won't be long and one will show up within your grasp.

I was lucky to find a low mileage 2.88 differential and prefer it over the stock 3.07. The 2.88 only went in the 1985 300D, so its hard to find. There's not that much difference between it and the 3.07, but it does lower the cruising speed RPM a bit. That and my 15" wheels.

I think you will need a different driveshaft too, in swapping out the 240D drivetrain for a 300D.

On the other hand, you could keep the 240D differential and engage in some title-for-title drag races with other forum members. Particularly if you keep the 240D trunk emblem and race only 240Ds. Recommend you disable the hood latch so they can't peek.
