A quick story from lastnight coming home from a whitewater trip w/a friend on I-68 in maryland w/big hills and a loaded down 81 240D. Car is such a trooper and does a great job. Now the fuel gauge has always been a bit sticky down low, but with a little hitting of the gauge and checking the trip odo I would always be fine, and the reserve light would ALWAYS come on when it was really time to hit the fuel. Well, I forgot to reset the trip odo and was figuring I would fill up in about 40 miles or so after the big hills. Kept knocking the fuel gauge but got a consistent 1/4 tank. No reserve light.

coming down a big grade the engine just cut out. running veggie, im used to clogged filters but this wasnt the case. coasted for as long as possible up-hill and stopped in a bad spot, nothing around that even suggested fuel. Time to hunt the car for anything remotely veggie or petroleum based. aha! a gallon of Rotella T 15W-40. In she goes to the tank, and off we go like nothing happend! After priming the pump again the old girl didnt seem to give a crap what was in the fuel tank! Didn't even smoke! Made it over the next mtn and into a town w/3 service stations. - but NO DIESEL!!! Pulled into Sh$$tz and put in 3 gallons of kerosene and off we go to the next town that actually had (VERY EXPENSIVE) diesel. But anyway, just had to share the story. Signed, A PROUD OWNER OF THE ORIGINAL ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLE!
