Disconnecting aux fan
I found a good looking auxiliary fan at a local junkyard (for my 83 240D) but I had hell of a time disconnecting the two wires on the back. I had to use pliers but I ended up tearing the wires this way. I have the fan at home now but I don't want to cause the same kind of damage to my existing wires because I want to reuse them. What's the proper way to disconnect these wires? Do I have to disassemble the fan from the front?

I don't believe that the wires are supposed to be disconnected at the fan.
![]() I know i have a 300D, but the replacement fan was from a 240D, and the wiring setup was identical... *shrug* |

The Warden is right. The wires are soldered to the fan motor like this:
The pigtail conn's to the harness near the drivers side of the radiator under the chassis. Here's a pic of the fan with the pigtail/conn: LMK if you need tips/help re-soldering the harness from your old fan to this one.

I guess I screwed up really bad this time. I should have just taken a look at a picture of a new fan and I would have seen that the wires come with it. I don't think soldering is an option here because I actually completely pulled one of the metal prongs and it's somewhere at the junkyard. The other one is ripped and partially in the fan. Another lesson learned. At least I have the exchange policy so I might be able to get another one. If not I'll have to get a new one. Thanks guys for the help.

My old motor works, but the problem is that when it spins some of the blades hit the shroud (or the backbone of the fan) and that leads to horrible noise and vibration. Strangely when I spin the fan by hand there's no contact and it appears fine and I made sure the 3 nuts on the back are tight. One of the blades is broken though so I'm wondering if that's causing an imbalance and the contact of the blades. I didn't want to glue it back because I'm afraid the glue wouldn't hold it. What's a good way to remove the front bolt? That's how I broke the blade.
I guess I'd need a complete fan, not just the motor. How much?

I can pick up good used fans for about $15-$25 at the local yards. Add $12 for shipping and a few bucks to pull it and you have a fan. Rusty can sell you a new one for $175.
PM me if you need one. |
