FSS resetting
 

Anyone have success or failure resetting the FSS on a 99 E300turbodiesel?
I've followed the instructions in the owner's manual and a procedure given
by Gilly in a search, but still no luck. I did get a # 30013 display before the
Service Now indicator came back. Ideas?

I did it a few weeks ago and it worked perfectly. Here's the exact procedure from the owner's manual.


1. Turn electronic key in steering lock to position 2.

2. Within 4 seconds press button 0 twice.

3. The present status for days or distance is displayed. Within 10 seconds turn electronic key in steering lock to position 0.

4. Press and hold button 0 while turning electronic key in steering lock to position 2 again. The present status for days or distance is displayed once more. Continue to hold button 0.

After approx. 10 seconds a signal sounds, and the display shows 10 000 miles (Canada: 15 000 km) for approx. 10 seconds.

5. Release button 0.

If the FSS counter was inadvertently reset, have a Mercedes-Benz dealer correct it.

The 30013 makes no sense, it is evidently a mileage. Is this the amount of miles on the vehicle?
ONE TRICK, in case you didn't pick up on it in one of my other posts, is on a 210 like this, the door has to be SHUT to reset the FSS!!! Get in the car and shut the door.

This time I got it to work by following the instructions you gave instead of just reading them. The first couple of times I'm sure I had the door open, and
a couple of times I got in a hurry or missed a step. In any case, it is reset.

That's funny. I just automatically shut the door to stop the beeping. I even always fasten the seatbelt before inserting the key just to avoid that infernal beeping. Well Steve, now you know. Glad you got it done.

They way I learned it (from another tech, who couldn't get it to reset either) is that if you read the owners manual, about the first thing it says is "Activate Instrument Cluster". So we were curious if this was the problem. So we dug into the WIS computer system (the shop information computer) and read a bunch of notes concerning the instrument cluster, and there it was, closing the door is what "activates" the instrument cluster. Got in the car, closed the door, and reset procedure worked just as advertised!

I'm losing my mind. This morning when I started my car the service due now
indicator came on again after successfully resetting it last night. Bizarre.

Lets go over it one more time:
Get in car, close door
turn key to "on" (so all the dash lights are lit)
push trip meter button twice, the amount of miles remaining should be indicated. If you get the "service now" indication when turning the key on, wait for it to disappear, then push the reset button twice. (this is pushed in rather quickly, it is "taptap" vs "tap...tap"
After you push the button twice, hold DOWN the button, then (WHILE holding in the button!) turn the key OFF, then back ON again, (keep holding in the button!) and wait, oh about 10-15 seconds, you will hear a "beep" and the odometer will now read 10000, THAT is when it is reset.

Can you display this info another way? i can't get this file to work, creating some type of error.
What is important to note (gegardless of what the document says, because sometime the info from MB is wrong) is that some vehicles you need to press and hold the reset button BEFORE switching off the ignition, MOST MB's work this way from my own observations, yet sometimes you'll see the instructions tell you to push and hold the reset button after you shut off the ignition. The instructions very well won't tell you to close the door also, although the instructions may or may not tell you to "activate the instrument cluster".
Can someone do a copy and paste on the doc that was just posted?

Resetting Flexible Service System

Prior to resetting any flexible service systems, turn ignition key off. Close all doors and wait until all instrument displays are off. This may take up to 45 seconds or so.

Stage 1 Maintenance reminder

Model: 170 (SLK) only 6\1\97

1 Turn key to position 1

2 Press button on cluster between fuel gauge and speedometer and hold down

3 Turn key to position 2

4 After 10 seconds, a signal will sound and the maintenance indicator displays 7,500 miles

5 Release button



Stage 2 Basic Flexible Service Systems 1998

Stage 3 Advance Flexible Service Systems 1998

Engines: M-111 (4cyl) M112 (V-6) M113 (V-8) 104 (6cyl Twin cam) 119 (V-8) 120 (12 cyl) 606 (Diesel)

1 Turn electronic key in the steering lock position 2

2 Within 4 seconds, press button "O" twice

3 Note! The present status for days or distance is displayed.

Within 10 seconds, turn electronic key in steering lock to position 0

4 Press and hold down "O", while turning electronic key in steering lock to position 2. The present status for days or distances is displayed once more. Keep holding down button"O"

Note! After approx. 12 seconds a signal beep sounds and the display will show 10,000 miles or 15 000 km for other countries

5 Release button "O"






Active Service System

Models: 203 (C-class 2000) 215 (Coupe)

208 (CLK) 210 (E-Class) all except engine 111

1 Turn electronic key in the steering lock to position 1

2 Operate the system selection button (on steering air bag, left side bottom button) until the complete overview (total mileage and trip odometer) is displayed in the instrument cluster.

3 Operate the arrow button above the selection button until the service symbol and the actual remaining mileage, time, or service exceeded indication is displayed

4 Press the (R) button on the instrument cluster for about 3 seconds until the message "DO YOU WANT TO RESET THE SERVICE INTERVAL?" CONFIRM BY PRESSING THE BUTTON appears

5 Press the button (R) again within 5 seconds

6 The message "Remaining mileage" of 10,000 Miles or 15,000 Km will appear




Active Service System

Models: 220 (S-Class 2000)

1 Turn electronic key in the steering lock to position 1


2 Press systems select/voice control button (on the steering air bag, left side bottom button) as often as needed until basic display (total and trip mileage) is displayed in the instrument cluster

3 Operate the arrow button as many times needed to until the service exceeded message appears

4 Press the (R) button on the instrument cluster for about 3 seconds until the message "DO YOU WANT TO RESET THE SERVICE INTERVAL?" CONFIRM BY PRESSING THE BUTTON appears5 Press the button (R) again within 5 seconds

6 The message "Remaining mileage" of 10,000 Miles or 15,000 Km will appear

Note!

Please pay close attention to engine oil levels. When performing a service, which includes replacing the oil, please follow the manufacture oil quantity recommendation exactly. The oil level sensor can detect under fill or over filled engines by a small amount.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I got it done this morning after really following the instructions. Somehow didn't turn the key off after pushing button twice before pushing the button again. Anyway, it is done. I'm not
really the mechanical clutz it would seem, its just that computerized sequences have to be followed exactly or they don't work. that's why I could never be a programmer.
