At this point you have the choice to reuse the old gasket or use the dam gasket that comes with the new pump. I don't know where you'd find a used basket.

Maybe I should order a dam gasket. It has been on their with the regular metal one for a few thousand miles by now.

Okay Hattie, Your confusing me. Enlighten us with what you exactly did about the type of gasket(s) that you have on your pump. You didn't have a basket or did you remove it?

The basket is available new as a 'tool' to aid IP R&R, cost is minimal, under five bucks I think.

We'll thanks to this thread I was able to determine that my car has the original vacuum pump as well. I believe that I'll help feed my indy on this one.

I just swapped out my vacuum pump. It is really very easy. I turned the crank to the BDC as Pierburg recommends. The basket was already removed or not orginally installed and I just used the dam gasket. When I removed the old VP, I noticed some scoring on the cam of the IP timer. I went ahead and installed the new one but ordered a new timer. When ready to install the new timer, I re-examined the cam and it was very smooth. The only thing I could think, was that the the VP cleaned up the cam by slightly burnishing in the 2 weeks of driving. I can't return the timer since it came from Mercedes so does anyone need a timer for a 603? O.

I might be interested in the timer, if the price was right... You can send me an email at: rc51@cableone.net

BTW - glad your vac pump swap went smoothly!

Mike it's not hard to change out if you have the necessary tools. We did it in my shop took a couple hours but not a bad job at all. Spent more time udoing my belt tensioner etc. than installing the pump.

Dan (oilyrag), I replied to your email but it bounced back, something about "no such mailbox" I think. Could you send me a good address? I'll send a PM too.

Yeah Tom, I would love to do it myself, but not without a shop and access to all the tools I might need. In addition this seems to critical to wait until I can organize a family trip to a relative's shop.

Very understandable. I try to do alot of my maintenance at my dad's shop. However, sometimes I have to get it done here at my local Indy. It costs

Where is the vacuum pump in the 124 FSM?

I have the factory CD-ROM version of the W124 FSM and have been searching through both CDs for the section on the vacuum pump (the one on the engine, of course, not the one under the seat). The factory was really clever in hiding it this time, I can't find it anywhere! Help, anyone?

Are you unsure of how to R&R it?

Just pull the fan, the tensioner bits, and unbolt it. Pretty simple. I think the bolts torque to about 7-9ft-lbs only. They're small. Should be able to do this in two hours tops.

I THINK I pulled my upper rad hose, just can't recall.
