190D starter problem
Hi all,
I'm pretty new around here. Been lurking for awhile. I recently bought a 1984 190D (auto) with a bad tranny. The previous owner tried to pull the tranny out, then realized that he was in over his head when he couldn't get it past the tranny tunnel. So he just abandoned it. This weekend I've been finishing the job of getting it out. I haven't had a chance to hear it run, but I have a written guarantee from the P.O. that it will. Before I dump money into repairs I'd like to confirm that it does run well enough to make it worth my time. I have the starter bolted back in, and the starter/inhibitor switch connected and in the Park/Neutral position, but now the starter won't fire and the glow plug light doesn't come on. before I pulled the tranny, the starter wasn't mounted, but when the key was turned you could hear the solenoid and it would spin free...now nothing. Any ideas of what it could be now? Any suggestions would help. Thanks Drew

Put the ground strap back on, there is now no connection between the engine and the negative side of the battery. IFRCO, the ground strap is on the right side, held on by one of the bell housing bolts.

Sweet,
thanks, Peter. That was it. The ground strap was off when I got it, but I figured that there must have been a few since the starter was firing with it off. The transmission must have been grounding itself through the tranny tunnel. Now, got it to turn over. It fired right up and ran for just a second, like there was still a little fuel in the system, but the IP had lost prime. I know it's a dumb question, but can anyone tell me where my primer pump is in this thing. I'm used to my toyota where the pump is on the fuel filter housing. It'll be another pay period until I can afford a service manual ![]() Thanks, Drew

Oops. No primer pump, you have to crank it forever!
I'd pull the main filter when going back together and fill it with fuel before attempting to start. Be prepared to charge the battery! Crack the fuel lines at the injectors and crank with the throttle wide open until you get all the air out, else it takes forever! Tighten up, recharge, glow it and it should start sooner or later! Thanks again, peter. I'll probably hold off until I can borrow my father-in-law's charger/starter. Is there a reason for no primer pump? Seems strange. I'll post up after I have a chance to crank it for awhile with the starter.
Thanks, Drew

Who knows? I no longer ask those questions, the answers usually leave me lying on the floor chewing on the carpet, and I'm too old for that anymore.
I'd wait until I had the tranny in, no need to run it without the tranny on anyway. Fill the fuel filter when you get ready to start it, shouldn't take too long that way. Peter
