Oil filter O-rings replaced

I read somewhere here that replacing the O-rings at the bottom of the oil filter center tube might reduce or eliminate hydraulic lifters in my 87 300 D.
After a road trip today from Rhode Island down to New York and back my lifters were louder than usual. This afternoon I pulled the center tube and the two O-rings were worn and hard as a rock! I put some new O-rings in and the oil guage does not go below 2 bar.at 650 rpm idle! Normally it at idle the guage showed 1.5 bar. Now the engine has not even the slightest valve tap and I was going to replace lifters! Guess I dont need to now! Thanks to whoever posted about replacing O-rings.

Don't worry your lifters will be back!

I replaced the o rings too and the pressure went up slightly. So far the only thing that I have found that will quit my lifters is Mobil 1. But they still tick a lot, but it helps.

I noticed that! I just this past saturday did an oil change (my first on my own I may add) and the rings looked ok (idle is slightly over 2bar pressure anyways) and however, the lifter/valve noise I used to have when the engine was cold has gone away. The old oil (used by the MB dealer I went to) was Valvoline something or other, I switched to Mobil 1 Devlac, and the noise is gone when its cold. There used to be lots of ticking and clacking, no more! I am quite happy that the noise went away. I'm also sticking to devlac, its good stuff, its flowing through the veins of both SD's as of Saturday.

*On a side note: I noticed the server for this forum is still running an hour ahead, lol. Who hosts this site? My server (that I run/maintain personally) sets itself.

My '85 300td has two small o-rings but the filters come with the large o-ring for the lid and only one small one. Mann filters BTW.

Guess I'll save 'em up but can't understand why they only supply one.

You New England guys still have lobster sandwiches at McDonalds?

Last time I was in Maine they did.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill, What brand do you buy that gives you a small "O" ring too. I only get the onre for the lid, and two copper washers.

Thanks. Mann is a good filter. If I get one at a time I would change one of the two everytime I changed my oil.

I've always gotten the little o-rings at the dealer. Just bought them whenever I was getting something else. They are so cheap ya just gotta change them from time to time.

Good for you. Just had to prove to him wrong. Grow up and play nice.

I see you noticed in my previous post I do use Mann.

I failed to mention in addition to the two o-rings I mentioned, Mann also gives you a cooper washer as well that fits on the drain plug.

Cheers,

Bill
