follow up on Hatterguy's Oil Pressure readings

Hatterasguy, did you ever find what was causing the oil pressure readings you were seeing? Do you still have that car?

Never looked into it. Lab found nothing unusual in the oil. I changed the oil pressure sender last year, because the needle was bouncing, the new sensor seems to have fixed that. Its still within spec according to MB, although it just pegs at 3k after a hard run. But 3k is spec!

The engine has 255k miles on it and is almost 20 years old, when it loses oil pressure and blows I'll swap in a long block. The readings have not changed in the 20k+ miles that I have put on the SDL since I got it.

It's interesting to see what everybody else is getting.

My 262k mile TD idles hot at about 1.5 bars.

My 372k SD idles right around 1.0 when hot.

They both jump up with the rpms.

Say What?? I thought the first post asked how much idle oil pressure for a W123??
Last time I checked, My '77 240D was STILL a W123.

1.5 for the sedan at operating (80 deg C) temp. Idle engine speed is 600-650rpm.

When the wagon used to idle at 60 deg C, it was constantly at 2. But when it got to 80 deg C, it was at 1.75. No idea on idle engine speed, no tach. It's said that if you have an idle engine speed of 750-800, your idle pressure should increase slightly. Maybe up to 2 when hot.

At idle, my 300d with 218K is around 1 bar. It pes to 3 as I accelerate to highway speeds.

hmm

Clue me in...

My car has a bunch of marks, I assume in PSI:

0
15
30
45

Driving normal, its 45. Starting up cold its 45. After its up to around 175 on the temp gauge, it goes down to around 30. After a spirited highway run at 65-80, and temperature going up a little around 180, the pressure is a little above 15.

Is this ok?

I assume, really hot oil=less pressure.

Once car cools down after highway, slowly makes way back to 30.

Say this!
Sorry, I was waking up a post from 2004 - that made this a dead thread didn't it?
Hatters guy's ol sender is electric. Is the 240D? I think not.
I wanted to know if he tried a new sender which he did. the reason is the electric senders are something I am studying, I've been seeing them give flaky readings, some low, some high and some jumpy.
All the comments people add are of no interest to me, Thanks!

Aha, that is what I epected, the sender was flaky.
I doubt you will ever lose pressure. Spec at idle is 1.5 bar hot. anything less than 3 at running speeds would be of concern though.

The electrical sender is now something I suspect whenever I see odd oil pressure readings on the 6 cyl engines. I suppose they get plugged up or the resistance element gets worn out or something.

Shouldnt the real question be whats everyone idling at and whats your oil pressure?

Oil Pressure Gauge

Mine is the same model as yours, and remains constantly at 3 Bars Idling at about 900 rpm's or driving from 0 to 120Kliks.

My feeling is that at an RPM setting lower than 900 it will indicate a drop in oil pressure - right?/wrong?

Interesting. I noticed that when not under load, like just loafing around town, the oil pressure stays just below 2 bar at hot idle. Yet after a hard highway run, especialy with the AC on it drops to 1bar. I suspect the oil cooler T stat is causing this. The oil really starts flowing through the oil cooler on the highway.

I doubt this is an engine wear problem, if it was it would have gotten worse. Since there is no change this idicates to me:
This is related to the oil cooler.
Or the guage is off.
I didn't notice any oil pressure difference between 5w40 Delvac 1, and 15w50 Mobil 1.
