I now have twin 300SD's

I took posession of my second '85 300SD yesterday. This is the one on eBay with the broken timing chain. I took a trailer out the the west side of the state yesterday after voting. (1-1/2 hours in line and got there at 7:30am) After enduring many hardships; flat tire, wrong turns, I arrived and trailered the beast.

The paint's not the best. It has that malady where it looks like the clear coat is coming off. The front seats have lost their spring too. Otherwise, a rust free, 95,000 mile body and an engine with a broken timing chain and camshaft. (new tranny though)

The engine in this one is different than my brown SD. This one has the turbo above the intake and some funny big tumor underneath it. See the last photo. What is this?

Michael:

It dawned on me later to warn you that I'm typically very optimistic. I hope I didn't paint too rosy of a picture regarding the car. Regarding the seats having lost their spring, sorry about not catching that. I enjoyed the seats compared to my 123 rock!

You sure made a quick trip.

Don

That's (apparently) a CA emissions car, so I imagine that thing is somehow related to the CA specific stuff. Some form of EGR?

That is definately a CA car. That big thingy is either a catalyst or a trap ox. They look identical. Take down the VIN and call a dealer to see if the swap has been made. I just hope the turbo on the car is not fried.

Now I will post my favorite link..........

emissions swap...part one

Mike,

yea, that's Bill's Brother's trailer. The tire with the cord showing on the driver side blew and I had to pull over at exit 59 on I-96.

California emissions, I thought so. Is there anything I should change or remove, or do I leave it stock?

Don,

Don't worry, I'm more than pleased with the car. It's clean and rust free. We found out the miles are true and it recently had the tranny rebuilt. But if the A/C, heat or cruise control don't work, I'm gonna blame you!

Call in the VIN to see what you have first.

Dealer wouldn't FAX the VMI to me but stated the trap oxidizer campaign was closed on the vehicle.

I will at some time stop by a dealer with proof of ownership and look myself.

I would get the intake , ehaust manifold turbo and headpipe off one of the normal 617 turbos. They will bolt up as an assy.

Don't forget the oil feed line to the turbo.

Thank you, but I'm not sure at all that the rest of my family shares my enthusiasm. I think there is a conspirasy brewing to not allow me to buy any more cars.

That's ok. I have 2 SDs and and SDL. I'm good for the next 20 years.
