front end noise: bearings?
gives off a high pitched cyclic squeaking noise every time i weight the car into a right turn. same thing but to a lesser degree on right turns; i really have to corner hard to hear anything.
i checked it out, and the front left wheel bearings appear to be to be incorrectly adjusted, ie there is about 1cm of play when you wiggle the wheel. the right wheel had almost no play, say less than 1mm. apparently, right before i bought the car, a shop replaced the front left bearings. on both sides the brake pads were scraping slightly against the discs such that the wheel could not quite spin freely. is this normal? what could be causing the noise? i adjusted the steering gearbox 3000 miles ago or so.. might have overtightened the adjusting barrel (turned it several complete turns, drove it awhile, then read in the maintenance manual that you are supposed to do the job with the gearbox removed, and then go in 45 degree increments, checking as you go.) but it solved the problem of excessive steering play.. thanks, jeff |
