Cleaning Intake
I have done some searches involving cleaning the intake, but still have a few questions.
1.) Must you remove the intake to clean it? 2.) If you do remove the intake, is the gasket re-usable? 3.) Can you use Carb Cleaner to clean it? Any hints/suggestions will be appreciated. PS.... I just disconnected the EGR, seems a golf tee got stuck in the vacuum line...

Unfortunately I don't have anything to add to cleaning the intake. I am curious myself though since I am about to do it myself.

I've read here that a good way to clean the intake manifold is to take to an automotive machine shop and have them put the manifold in their hot tank to clean it. That sounds like a reasonable way to get it really clean.

I tried the gunk and solvent approach. Did not work well. Highly recommend steam or hot tank. The stuff in the manifold was like tar. Reusing the gasket is not a good idea. Trying to clean the manifold without removing it from the engine would be a real bad idea.

Gasket
Ok, I must remove intake and must not re-use gasket. FastLane does not list an intake gasket. Perhaps it is known by a differant name???

I recently had to pull the manifolds on Lilly, the 300D, to replace a leaking manifold gasket. I too was astounded at the amount of guck that had collected inside the intake tract; it was 1/4" thick in some places.
With the manifold off, I sprayed degreasing engine cleaner into the manifold let it sit overnight. The next day, I took it to the local DIY carwash and used the pressure sprayer to blow everything out; it worked as good as anything you can do at home. Wear eye protection. To clean the intake ports in the head, I carefully scraped the stuff out with a collection of various homemade tools. I also kept my shop vac close by to keep most of the stuff from going any further in the engine but, I didn't lose too much sleep about it going into the cylinders since I'm sure pieces of that crap come loose and are ingested all the time.

There is only one manifold gasket on the OM617: H4009-59251 is the number in WorldPac/Fastlane. Look in the "exhaust" category.

Gasket
So, the intake gasket is listed in the exhaust section. mmmm, I am sure that makes sense somewhere. It would appear the intake and exhaust gaskets are one in the same. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong....

I just had mine appart last weekend.
The intake AND exhaust gasket are one in the same. It is one single gasket for both. Not two seperate gaskets.

Thanx Leo
Thanx for the heads up on the time to do. I will start on Saturday and finish on Sunday. Did you notice any differances after cleaning ? Like better performance, less nailing noises, or anything.

....differences after cleaning?
Not me. Terminally dirty fingernails and satisfaction of cleaning up a mess. I did this on my 240D when I removed the EGR and its manifold and put and old one on. I have never heard any reports of performance improvements but I will eventually get around to it on both my turbos anyway
