w114/115 diesel coupe?
I tried this thread in "vintage" discussion and received no response so I deleted it there and moved it here, anybody have any ideas?
A friend was driving a 72 220d, he was told the auto tran. went out and when I offered him a trany out of my 76 parts car he said the 220 was too rusty to fix, he just bought a new van, yada, yada. Anyway, he said he was not going to do anything with the car and I could have it if I would get it out of his way. Took the trailer to get it, very nice interior, new tires, new exhaust and four new calipers (he said). Car has been sitting for 9 months but started right up, smoked a little but sounded pretty good, trans would not pull or even grab. Winched the car on the trailer, got it home and checked the trany fluid, none showing, added a quart and fluid started pouring out the broken line to the cooler, grabbed line off parts car and installed, added three quarts of fluid and drove the car off the trailer, brakes a little sticky but holding and the car acts like it wants to run. The engine oil cooler started leaking pretty good so I was scared to run it much. My problem is the car is a complete rust bucket, this guy lived on the beach and it shows, the glass, the rubber, the plastic, the chrome, the interior are all very good but the floors, trunk, quarters, rockers and even the fender liners are not recoverable, the real sad thing is it has a working manual sunroof but I don't think I am brave enough to try welding it on one of the other cars. The po claims the car has only 85 k and it starts and seems to run like this is true so I am looking for a body to give a heart transplant. I have always liked the coupes but I seem to be attracting w115 parts so the w123 300cd is out. Did mercedes ever make a w114/115 coupe with a diesel? with a 4-5 speed? If not, then which coupe will I have the best luck transplanting this 220d engine into and will it bolt up to a 4-5 speed that might have come stock in one of these coupes and since I seem to be working on a xmas type wish list, how about something from 1968 since my wife was born that year. Any ideas will be appreciated and thanks for listening to my rambling. __________________

Going from gasoline to diesel conversion is easier than the other way around. MB never built a 114/115 diesel coupe, but that doesnt mean it cant be done.
Also swapping entire interiors on 115's is not difficult, as I'm sure you know. But the sunroof swap probably requires deadly accurate welding at all 4 corners, doesnt it? |

Yeah, the sunroof welding sounds like a project I could really screw up.
Any ideas on what year and model coupe would be best to use for a transplant car? I really have no idea if the 250 is better than the 280 or if the earlier years were more likely to rust, etc. I assume one or more of the coupes came with a 4-speed that will bolt up with the 220d engine or do I need to start a junkyard search for a 5-speed from a 190?

Did they make a 5-speed that would bolt to a 616. without machine work?

616 compatiable Euro model 1985 123 5-spd tranny sold recently on ebay for $500.
On the Coupe, beware the years of the steel workers' strike that ran from 1973-1979. There is no real difference between the 250C and the 280C aside from the engine. And the transplant would probably be easier in its entirety than converting to standard shift. Toughest part of putting diesel engine into gasoline car would probably be the dash glow knob and glow plug indicator. Another thing about coupes and sedans is that interior parts are NOT interchangable...... seats, door panels, etc wont swap. And deffinitely look for a coupe with electric windows. On the pillarless coupe racing around with all windows down is said to be lots of fun with superb air flow and aerodynamics. |

I don't know anything about the steel workers strike but I am assuming you are saying stay before 73.
I was thinking the 250c would be better since it used the same tranys as the 220d, (still thinking of a manual). If I used the fast glow kit any light would work for the glow indicator and a momentary? switch should work for the starter if the knob was too hard to position and a simple on/off cable for the ip positioning. How much trouble are the older electric windows? I might as well look for a sunroof also.
