Question 617 cone filter

Quick question...I know some people have put cone-type filters directly onto the turbo on their 617's.

I could care less about performance; I just want the stock filter assembly GONE. I know that, ideally, you want the filter moved forward some...but I can live with the engine taking in hot air at this point. The last set of rubber mounts broke, the dealer wants $7 apiece for replacement mounts, I don't have time to get them from Fastlane at a decent price, and I'm just tired of the setup in general (and yes, I'm a bit frustrated at the moment).

So, three questions...first, what size filter did you use? Second, where did you get it from? Third, are paper-type cone filters available, or are the only cone filters out there K&N-type units?

I'd like to do this today if at all possible...and am trying to keep it as cheap as possible. The alternate is drilling through the rubber mounts and putting in bolts that go all the way through.

Thanks!

Hey Warden, I see I am going to have to meet with you maybe at the next GTG at Starbux in Mtn View and show you my setup.
I use a K&N model RU1000 on my '85 engine in the yellow 300TD. Special order from any reseller.
I also am sucking in hot air but I don't care. It runs better than with the stock "U" shaped pipe and nisy air filter cannister.
also see, they take air in over from the side, its cooler maybe: Boost Controller Install Pix

I have the K&N style filter on a 45 degree bend that puts it over by the battery which is as close to the right headlight you can get on a W116,

My bracket was busted too.....got damned tired of the banging.

Thanks for the replies.

I needed something PDQ, so I drilled holes through the remains of the rubber mounts and put in bolts that went through the rubber. Hopefully the rubber that's there will still give a slight cushion effect. Other than that, the air cleaner's not going anywhere unless one of the bolts (or another part of the bracket) breaks...I'm not holding my breath.

DDH, I would have been there yesterday, but my list of to-do stuff is just plain too long...hopefully I'll be there next time; this last meet was actually the first one I've missed. I'm going to keep that thread handy for if this "fix" doesn't work...or for the next time i need to replace the air filter, which will actually be pretty soon. I'll have to see if there's a paper filter that'll cross-reference to the K&N filter listed.

Thanks again

I made an Air cleaner bracket out of a piece of scrap metal to replace the original one. It lasted about 100,000 miles then broke. So I made another one out of a thicker piece of scrap metal, so that one should last another 200,000 miles which should out last me.

I replace the rubber mounts as necessary. Seems like they were less than $3 each from a non dealer source.

The rear 3rd of my air cleaner mount is completely gone (came that way)
My air cleaner is silent and shakes around only a bit.
Perhaps the problem isn't with the air cleaner but with the engine?
I realize these babies are supposed to shake a bit but everyone checked their rack damper bolt? Injectors cleaned? May be something easier fixed than hacking up your cars origional setup. Yet I still plan on reinforcing the mount on mine to make it less susptible to breaking.
278K miles...replaced? I don't know...noisy? no.

I like the stock air cleaner becuase it is huge, effecient, and looks right on the engine...I cannot say the same praise for the oil seperator but meh...its a diesel...not a rice-box

Thumbs up 617 Air Cleaner

I was in a store called Industrial Liquidators last summer, and I saw some rubber isolators like the three under the air cleaner, only they weren't metric, and were a little bit taller by (1/4"), and the metal screws were a little wider (1/4"), but the rubber was the same width as the originals. I thought WTH, and I bought 3 for $.50@. I then drilled slightly larger holes, widening both the air cleaner bottom and the brackets to 1/4", secured them with 1/4" Nylok nuts ($.25 @), and the difference in the sound level is amazing. $3.26, 45 min of labor, and 9,000 miles later, the silence is deafening!
However, I must admit, if I could figure out a good-looking way to hook up an oil separator, I'd probably put on a cone filter, too. But, as my Daddy used to say, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?"

I saw a guys 300D about a year ago with a aircleaner made from a shopvac filter, and it had been in use for 5 or 6 years. I had not seen that done since the days of my Jeep CJ ownership, guys would use the wet/dry shop vac filters for use in mudding races.
