83 617 turbo valves adjustment

I just finished adjusting the valves for the first time, the intake valves had to be tightened up us expected but the exhaust valves were all to tight. The gaps were consistently around 0.2mm instead of 0.35 per FSM.
I thought i'd ask you guys if that may be a symptom of something, did the PO try to accomplish something by changing it or was it just a mistake?

Generally they become tighter over time.

If your intake valves were loose, especially if all of them were loose, they were probably set to the wrong spec previously.

The tight exhaust valves are normal on a car that is due for adjustment. If you were able to fit a 0.2mm feeler in there they were not that tight. I've had some where even a 0.1 feeler won't fit prior to adjustment.

If they get tight over time then the PO or their mechanic got the intake valves wrong. the engine smoked a bit when it was idling. That could be the reason.

Your engine should run

smoother with a good valve adjustment. It won't necessarily be quieter but valve sounds should be consistent from valve to valve. You can verify this with a mechanic's stethoscope. The only standout sound should be the pocka-pocka from the vacuum pump.

It is true that valves on the OM617 engine will tighten with wear. The exhaust valves will wear faster than the intake. The MB valve service interval on your engine is 15k miles. They will basically never "wear out" if serviced regularly and use good oil.

I adjusted mine last weekend and my 306k mile 1983 300CD runs smooth and powerful. You may smoke at startup after the adjustment but a short drive will clear that up.

If they were that tight, another adjustment about 2-300 miles down the road will really smooth things out. Then she will purr.
