Gotta Love Block Heaters
Brian C. I hope you are reading this one . . . another day in winter climate and the '87 fired w/o hesitation. That block heater makes quite a difference. I can't believe that I went w/o it before (didn't see much cold weather with it last year). Now I need to decide if I need to put ice & snow tires on the wagon or leave the Bridgestone Potenzas on. I drove it in snow this morning for the first time and when the turbo came in the back end wanted to go around. Made for fun driving. Do ice & snows make enough difference???

Ditto!!
I was just thinking that this morning. The only thing not good is that they get corroded with tarnish and then you have to clean them with steel wool and WD 40 to get a good ground back. Maybe next time I will hard solder my wiring cord to them..

Last winter I survived (barely) with a set of "Futura Advantage Plus Touring" Tires....needless to say they got horrid traction in ice/snow and even pretty bad in the rain (hitting the pedal too hard would spin out the right rear tire...!!) So this fall I changed to a set of those fancy Goodyear Assurance tires....they're amazing....in the rain I haven't even been able to induce a skid or make the tires spin, ever. I've even tried! In the snow they're much much better too, but it still spins and slides around....but thats just because the car is so heavy. I don't have a block heater....I wish I did, it puts out about 15 horsepower for the first 3/4 miles of my morning drive, I wish I could start it warm.

I am certain I will be putting a block heater in the '84 300D Turbo. Not to drive it during the winter but for winter starting. My '87 had one so I just added the cable.
After taking a couple more jaunts in the wagon I have decided ice & snows will be in the near future.

I installed a new one in the engine I rebuilt and I'm glad I did. Hopefully I won't need it much. The engine that was replaced really needed it the last couple years, but even when it wasn't quite so tired it sure made starting easier. Haven't had a starter problem yet ( and hope to stay that way for a long while)

I put one in last night. 19mm allen with a 5 foot pipe got the plug out. Threaded in the element and tightened with a 1-13/16" socket and a 3/4" ratchet. Plugged the cord in (after adding some coolant) and it started heating up.
