high rpm cruising speed?
Got a quick question....what is your engine rpm @ 60mph? Mine is at 2600rpm @ 60mph...doesnt that seem high? Is the torque converter not locking up or something? Just seems a bit high....
83 300D Turbo...I can feel the car shift into all 4 gears...it slips a little going into 4th which im not suprised about because the car has 313k on the original transmission..I have a spare good transmission but I'm just curious about the high cruising RPM for now.. Thanks in advance! |

Mine does 2600 at 60....thats normal....when I cruise at 80 its over 3100rpm As for the transmission, I don't think these have a locking torque convertor...do they? I never read that they do anywhere....our van does, but its...far newer....I don't think these ones lock up. Mine slips going into fourth if its colder or I am accelerating quite hard.....and its only at 219,600....eh, it will live. Can always replace a tranny.

yeah i think that the engagement point is very low on them.....seems like benz was obsessed with the "smoothness" of the low engagement point....only thing I dont like about my D is that it likes to try to drive thru the brakes because of the low engagement point...yet the 2nd gear shift in all of them is like having a shift kit in a TH400 lol

Yep those first couple of shifts are pretty quick, I'm also at 2600rpm at 60 mph. And I also have a slight flare on those cool mornings on the 300dt. Probably due too its current race life? I bought ours has 175,000. miles

I know it's a different car, but for reference:
My 91 300D 2.5 Turbo cruises at about 2250 rpm @ 62mph/100kmh, and about 2700 rpm @ 75mph/120kmh. I imagine this is about normal because the car only has 88000km on it.

I bet my 240D is turning about 3400 RPM's at 60 mph. Wish I had a tach so I know for sure. 46xx RPM is about 85 mph, or so my manual says. I guess one of these days I'll write down the max RPM's for each gear.

Top speed on my 409d is about 68-70 so I'm guessing it has to be spinning close to 5k at speeds above 65mph but I don't have a tach on it. I wish i did. 65mph in my 300td sounds like about 40mph in the 409d. I'm pretty sure it has a 4.11 rear end since it has duals.

At 60 mph, these are the estimated rpms of all my cars:
Volvo 740 TD: 2400 72 220D: about 3500 72 280 SE 4.5: About 3000 87 300D: 2400 or so 88 300 TE: 3200 Benz spins them pretty fast. Top speed on the cars is 85 for the 220D, 120 or so (5000 rpm redline) for the Volvo, 125 @ 6200 rpm for the 280, 130 at 5000 rpm for the 300D, and about 120 @ 6600 rpm for the 300E. You are probably used to modern american or japanese cars with overdrive trannies (usually quite steep) with lockup torque converters. Benz cars fo that age have 1:1 top gears and no torque coverter lockup. Typical cruising rpm for a big amiercan car or light truck is 1200 rpm at 60, requireing a downshift on any significant grade. Max rpm for those engines is bout 4500 rpm, max. Top speed wil be determined by horsepower, not redline. Peter

For all you guys who want to know your RPM but have no tach, you can buy a small electronic tach that senses injector line pulses and is highly accurate for about $65. The beauty of the system is that all you have to do is clamp a sensor on one injector line and run a 12v power line to it.
I put one one on my diesel boat and it works great.

So don't leave us 1/2 informed, tell us the name of this jewel and where you got the tach please.
