Manual Shut Off Lever

I have been reading about the Manual Shut Off Lever in the "Diesel Dummy, Duh" thread, and that reminds me of a question I have.

I have never had to use the Manual Shut Off, but I have tried it out several times, and it does not shut off the engine. I will idle slower, but it has never shut down.

Is it necessary to hold it down for a long time before it shuts off? Is there some adjustment on the linkage that I need to make?

1982 240D.

Try holding it down for more than just a quick second, hold it down until it stops, and if it doesnt stop after say 10 seconds? then try adjusting your linkage

Manual Shutoff

If you have never used it, I am not sure how the linkage would get out of adjustment, but I am having this problem as we speak on my 93 300D and I am wondering if that since I guess this was designed to shut off the engine when the ignition switch does not (failure of the ignition vacuum shutoff) perhaps the key needs to be turned off for it to actually shut the engine off. Easy to check...

When I shut off the key, the engine stops. I do not have a problem there.

However, I am wondering if I ever do have a problem with the key not shutting off the engine, will I be able to shut it off with the manual shut off.

Make sure someone hasn't adjusted the cruise cable to tight, etc.

I found the problem, and when I got back in, phantoms had the same idea.

When I bought the car, the fast idle cable had been disconnected. I bought parts to fix and re-attach it, and adjusted so that there was a small amount of slack when the knob was turned fully clockwise. That was fine for allowing the engine to return to normal idle speed, but it was too tight to allow the manual shut off lever to be pushed to its maximum, and shut off the engine.

I added a little more slack to that cable, and now it works just fine.

Thanks to this board, I remembered that I needed to attend to this problem.
