Reversed plumbing for IP OM 617?

I found out that my friend has been driving with reversed fuel pipe on his 300D TD, he bought the vehicle to me yesterday and I discovered that his diesel filters were installed in reverse, that is the micro was installed to the fuel pump intake and the pre was installed to the outlet, no problems are noticeable except the vehicle became much smoother after I corrected the connections and it stopped nailing in the low RPM. I would like to know if this can cause any damage to his engine.

The only damage would be to the lift pump from large particles in the check valves, the main filter would remove everything before it got into the high pressure part of the IP.

This appears to be common, I've seen it more than once. I guess some people believe that the filters must be under pressure to work, just pulling the fuel through isn't enough!

Thanks for the reply psfred, I was thinking likewise too, lucky for this guy, he has been using high grade diesel which comes with an additive package and also has an inline sedimenter which probably saved his day, he was complaining that his vehicle surges at low RPM and knocks as well, quite understandable as the fuel goes to the micro first, after I corrected the line and changed his filters, the low RPM surge and knock went away.
