injector lines and valve clearances.

i have just put in a parts order for a glowplug set and a valve cover gasket along with other parts. i will be changing the glow plugs soon and i was wondering if the injector lines could be removed without damaging any seals to beter acsess the glow plugs. can it be done? my next question is what are the intake and exaust gap numbers? i have a feeler guage that reads:0.008,0.010,0.012,0.013,0.014,0.015,0.016,0.018,0.019,0.020,0.025,0.026 can anyone tell me what ones i need to use for the intake and exaust. i feel like an idiot for asking but could someone please help me with that. any ino would be GREATLY appreciated

You can remove the entire set of injection lines as a group. It would be recommended to get a crow's foot wrench for the lines on the pump as they are quite close together. Additionally, when you put the lines back onto the injectors, make absolutely sure that you have started the nuts by hand, and have not cross threaded them, prior to using a wrench. Sometimes they can get quite stubborn because they are not exactly aligned with the injector and you must muscle them back into place and simultaneously start the thread.

The intake requires .004 clearance cold.

The exhaust requires .014 clearance cold.

Good luck.

Hmmm...go with the next best size that you have  . Seriously, though, if you don't have one that's close enough you might want to invest in a new set of feeler guages. They're not expensive.

If you are going to set the valves to the wrong size, why bother to set them at all? They are already at the wrong clearance. Stop at Poop brothers and get a proper set of feeler gauges.

Do it once.

Do it right.

OK, are those clearances different than for a 617.912? I set mine to .10mm intake and .30mm exhaust, or is that just thousandts compared to mm's?

Yeah, we're dealing with inches at the moment, not millimeters. You did it right. With the engine cold, non-turbo 300D valves are set at 0.10mm for the intake and 0.30mm for the exhaust. The only difference for turbo models is that the exhaust is set at 0.35mm.

K,

Why are you replacing the GP? They are not a maintenence item. Check them with an ohmmeter and if all are about 0.7 ohms, they are all OK and don't need to replaced. If you find any bad ones, just replace those .

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Injection lines do not have to be removed to change GP so why do it and ask for more trouble.

you might want to change injector hose while doing valve cover gasket If you havent changed them yet.

kmaysob 01-11-2005 02:24 PM

because they are all weak. plus i wanna ream them out and get all the carbon so they will heat better. the lines have been replaced recently so they should be good.

K,

Hmmmmn, How do you know the GP are weak?

What test did you use? Or is your engine just hard to start?

i used an ohm meter, they showed more resitance than the new one i have. the engine is also hard to start when really cold. i orderd the kit with the updated relay also. i bought a big can of antiseize to put on them so they dont get too stuck. thanks for all the help.

Use a good penetrant like PB blaster and put it on when the engine is hot.
