91 350 Sdl
Hello all,
I am new to Mercedes and am in the process of purchasing a 91' 350 SDL with a bad motor. I have read up and found the 3.5L diesel to be a problematic engine and wanted to know what other MB motors will interchange, possibly earlier 3.0L diesel? Thanks, Kyle Brewington |

You could definitely consider the earlier 603 engine (3.0 litre) from the 1986-1987 300SDL or the 1987 300D. This engine is exactly the same physical size as the 350.
Remember that the earliest versions of this engine, with the #14 head, have issues with cylinder head cracking on certain engines, depending upon whether they have ever been overheated. |

I am assuming you got a great deal ... if so and you want to get the best performance and minimum modifications, get it rebuilt (or, do it yourself) ... crate engine is likely a bit too expensive since it would cost as much as the car with a good engine ...
Good luck ... my 91 3.5 is still running great ... only thing I have done out of the ordinary is remove intake tract and clean it up, disable the EGR (btw, I still continue to believe the close placement of the EGR and the valve cover venting to the intake are partially at issue as they cause the buildup of gunk that eventually breaks off into the intake) .... the low end torque is quite a bit better than in the earlier 3.0 engines.
