Injector Service

I think i'm going to have my mechanic pull my injectors out of my 81 SD so i can send them off to be rebuilt. Where do you guys recommend? Should I just find a local diesel fuel injection shop and see what they can do? I would like a fairly quick turn around time if possible. If not, is there a place who sells decent rebuilt ones? I havent had much luck finding injectors for the car on the web.

read some of the threads first...

Do a search for this on this forum and a lot of info will come up. Some good and some bad. The informed decision though is the better decision.

Is there a symptom that you are trying to get rid of or is this just a "I think I'll do this" like I do...

Nailing on one or two of the cylinders and shaking idle when hot are the symptoms. I buy OEM mercedes parts from a mechanic friend of mine who works on these at his cost. He says he can get me rebuilt injectors for somewhere between 25-35 a piece. Should I just buy those?

Reading that one of your concerns is "shaking when hot", is prompting me to post this question: Have you checked your rack dampener bolt? If not, read up on it, and then see if you have the old or new one. Might save you a bit of time and that precious $$.

Good subject here, I have a 82 240d also shakes when idling after it's warmed up. What should we be looking for on the rack dampeners?

Sorry about not mentioning the rack dampner bolt. Yes I did replace that. I thought i had mentioned it but turns out that it was in my other post. I ran 2 cans of purge tonight and it seems a little better but not perfect. Still have nailing on one cylinder bad when cold and so so when warm. Last time i ran purge i heard 0 nailing. I still here a little while running off diesel purge. It does it between 1300-1800 rpm or so.

I had mine rebuilt an "Lone Star Fuel Injection" in Fort Worth this summer. They seem to know injectors and pumps. Friendly folks.

Wish that had been my problem....

**edit**
by the way, they were $50 bucks apiece for the rebuild.

I used to overhaul injektors for the dealership I worked for. We had the shim packs in stock to equalize the injektor delivery pressures. A good shop will shim the springs to bring all injektors to within 15psi of each other.

Also, you should bring delivery pressures to maximum specifications, about 2000 psi on the turbo 617 engines...Bert

Try adjusting your valves. Tight valves can cause a shaky idle.

I have actually (not a recommended procedure) adjusted the delivery barrel in the pump to bring a weak cylinder back online. This is for desperate customers with big problems and it is only a band-aid repair...Bert

This is not rocket science.

Clean them yourself and put them back in. Run some searches. Read about the tiny holes that must be cleaned in the end of the pintles. The shop manual has good coverage of this topic. The easy way is to just install new nozzles.

If you get someone else to work on your injectors you likely will not get what you think you are getting.

If you have an injection shop or a foreign car pars shop locally check to see if you can buy nozzles for your injectors. See if they have nozzles that are not made in India. Search for info on nozzles made in india.

Ok, i'm finally getting around to working on the injectors. My car has become hard to start, is smoking more than usual, nails, and shakes way too bad for my taste at idle. For some reason when the car is cold it idles at about 900-1000rpm and after a long drive it seems to idle at about 700-800 which is when bad shaking occurs. I noticed tonight after cleaning the engine that two of my injectors are leaking around the base. Tiny bubbles form for a few minutes after the engine is shut off. I've searched and looked around on the forums and from what i've been reading german nozzles are no longer available. What is my best option here? Also, I think i knocked something loose when I degreased the engine. I have really hard shifts now, especially 1-2 and 3-4. I checked all vacuum lines and they are all connected properly. I read about this exact same thing happening to someone else after cleaning their engine. :-( Do I need need any special tools for removing the injectors? I also plan on replacing the return lines. There is someone on ebay selling the set for $15. Should I buy these or some OEM lines?

Don't send your injectors and pump anywhere. Look in the phone book for Diesel injector service. Any town of any size has them. I live near Corpus Christi and it has at least 5 independent injector service cos. Most car dealerships don't service their own pumps and injector. Certainly there are some that do but for the cost of equipment and time it really isn't worth it. If you don't find injection companies call a truck or heavy equipment repair shop, a equipment rental service, marine repair facilities, or any place that does Diesel repairs.

If you take your stuff into the shop personally you can bargan for a better price.
