603 identification
What information does the numbers on the front of the block tell about the version this engine is? It’s from a 603 out of an 87’ 300D.
Can’t see it in the picture, but there is a 6 in front of the 03, as in 603. I’m sure that’s probably obvious but thought I might mention it. :-) There are some cast in numbers on the left side of block also. Do they give any further information about this engine? |

They're casting numbers. You have a 603.960 which was the standard engine in the W124. The rest of the numbers in the string are revision and casting numbers.

I was lead to believe the 6th digit 603 96x defined which oil pan was factory fitted.

On my 603.971, the last 4 matched up with the engine serial number on my datacard.
