Unhappy injector spray pattern.

I have rebuilt the engine in my 1981 300D. First time for a diesel. I have built many a gas burner. But the fuel injection pump and its components are giving me aliitle trouble. I set the start of injection, with the drip tool i bought. I cannot get the thing started; i have tried everything i know. Except the injectors. I pulled the #1 injector out and re-connected it to the line. I wanted to see what kind of spray patterned i had. It came out in stream and a heavy mist- about like a can of WD-40. I thoght the pattern should have been fine mist and be atomized so it could blend with incoming air. Do the injectors need to be replaced now. I was going to later, but i wanted to get it cranked first. But helped is greatly needed and appreciated.
