Does transmission fluid mixed with the diesel cause less noise?

A buddy of mine said that in his 83' 240D he puts a quart of of ATF in with the diesel every other fill up and he claims that it cuts down on the nosie of the engine. Does this really help or would it cause problems down the road?

If anything it increases lubricity and quiets the IP(the source of most of the racket). I use a gallon of house brand soy oil during warm weather per tank of diesel, works the same.

Jim are you getting your B20 at a military filling station? There's B20 for sale here locally but it's at some military-affiliated filling station over in Arlington or Alexandria.

I heard that there is an additive in newer transmission fluid that does harm to our IP's I'm not 100% sure on this.

From what I was told, trans fluid boosts the cetane level in your tank and supposedly can help diagnose a problem by seeing how it changes your smoke color or opacity, or something like that, I was young then and didn't listen too close. oops!

What makes it quieter:
#1. Power steering fluid, one pint - one quart per tank.
#2. ATF, Dexron, Mercon, DEXRON/MERCON, one pint - one quart per tank.
#3. Any SVO, one quart - one gallon per tank.
#4. Marvel Mystery Oil, one pint-one quart per tank.
#5. Any WVO, one gallon per tank.
#6. Bad valve adjustment.

Warning:
SVO and WVO will give the fuel tank and system the ultimate cleaning = flush all the crud out = possible plugged filters.
Do NOT use this unless you carry spare filters and tools.

Running wvo sure made a difference for me. Its pretty quite compared to other old diesels I hear running around on dino diesel.

I think he means "bad"

as in the valves have lost their clearance and therefore are lowering the effective compression, resulting in much reduced combustion noise.

BAD valve lash

A bad valve lash (valve Clarence) will make a diesel almost as silent as a gasoline engine, but it steals power and wrecks MPG.
I heard a 1974 300D yesterday that was too quiet, followed them to fuel station, it has NO power, they owned the car since new, never adjusted valves, it is their Sunday driver only, current miles = 86,000
The sad part is rust showing in all the worst places, they washed paint, but never under car + drove it in Michigan winter.
Best guess:
Needs valve adjust = $140.00 USD + rust repair and full paint = $14,000.00 USD.

This would have been perfect for my rust thread, caught without my camera.

Note:
It has never been to dealer since purchase.

They must have been rich to have purchased such an expensive vehicle only to use it so rarely.

Regarding the slow speed of the car, perhaps it is because of the disregard for proper maintenance that gives diesels their great reputation for being slow. Surely our diesels aren't as fast as gasoline cars, but they aren't as slow as their reputation makes them out to be. My 300SD has no trouble keeping up with traffic.

Yeah, they're not slow at all, I was out with my dad again this morning visiting a factory for some stuff, and on the way to Holland, MI, we hit 107mph (the '83) on the freeway without too much effort (pedal was no where near the floor). Pushing some REAL rpms at that speed though

Where do you guys get to hit those crazy speeds without getting in trouble with the police? In my area everywhere you go you either can't hit that speed due to traffic or the police or both.
