1967 200diesel start sequence
 
Hi,guys,I just got my "new" 1967 200diesel delivered,it started on the truck,without glow plugs heat after 1 min cranking,driver did not know how to start it properly,maybe I do not remember exactly,either,what is the correct starting procedure for this one:turn the key till light comes on the dash,then pull the starter knob all the way,glow plugs dont seem to warm up...resistor on the dash does not go red...anybody?

Start sequence
 
1. Turn key all the way to the right -- dash lights come on.

2. Pull start knob almost all the way out -- short of cranking -- and wait for the little red element behind the grill to glow red.

3. When the element glows red, pull start knob harder & crank engine.

The dash light will dim when the glow plugs are getting power.

The starting procedure by estod is correct. I've driven these types of cars many years and miles, so I know the procedure. The grill estod is talking about is the ~1 inch crome button with the holes in it that is mounted in the dash and has the GP indicator inside.


Yes, the dash lights will dim when the GP are energized. This is a voltage drop caused my the GP drawing ~75 amperes. The newer cars with the parallel GP do the same thing.


Here something you may not know: When the starter is energized, the GP indicator will go out or not light when not pre-heated. But that does not mean the GP are de-energized. The GP are still drawing current and stay hot while the starter is cranking. The GP indicator is shunted out to compensate for the lower voltage caused by the starter current.

Thus the engine will start if you don't wait for the GP to pre-heat. It will just take a lot more cranking by the starter as it did on the truck.

Look at figure 28.
You preheat at position B-you feel spring pressure(I used to do it for half a minute)...then pull the knob a little harder (to position C)while stepping on the gas pedal..and "wrrrroam"-it starts and you just get your hand off the knob-the spring will bring it back to "driving position"(D). You may also need to use the primer pump,to saturate the fuel filter housing and injection pump...air in the fuel system may also hinder starting and cause rough idling...Also check glow plugs.Good luck!

Yea - I was not disputing what estod said - just stating what I see while I am waiting for the cig lighter looking thing to glow orange. On my '65 190Dc I usually have to hold the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor too.

If you follow the procedures given, and the dash resistor still does not glow red, than you likely have a bad glow plug. They are in series, so if one burns out, none of them will work.
