'77 240D getting harder & harder to start

Pump the hand pump and in two/three pumps it completly empties the clear prefilter(?). Two/three seconds the tank refills the filter to about 1/3rd. Is my tank strainer gummed up? If I get the engine started, you can just barely see a bit of fuel in the filter. Used to stay about 1/3rd full....

have you cleaned the pre chamber of carbon deposits? my car was grounding thru the carbon on the plugs.

but yes the strainer may be clogged with algae and biobor may be called for.

It sounds like you may be sucking in air somewhere, probably in the area of the primer pump or prefilter.

Your primary question sounds to me like "is my tank filter gummed up". Easy check is to disconnect fuel line at tank and see if fuel flows out pretty well or barely at all. Quick and easy. Do your pump up thing with the fuel cap off just to eliminate the possibility of an excessive tank vaccum problem existing first.

once a couple weeks ago, when it quit. Waited for about one minute, restarted w/no further problem at that time.

If it will run 80 after having problems starting then it is not the tank screen....
I think you do need to pull your glowplugs and check for carbon build up... and check to see that your glowplugs are working in general....

I get bubbles/foam in the prefilter if I hold the plunger

down after emptying it.

Without quoting a post further down - I released the fuel cap when I first noticed the prefilter emptying and pressure almost blew the cap out of my hand. Will hunt for the vent hose today. Looks like pressure would have filled the prefilter sooner rather than slowing down fuel flow....

I just now remembered that we used a fiber washer under the primer pump after buggering up the copper one - will address that also and post results.

Here's a hypothetical situation: Let's say there is a leak in the primer pump that sucks in air in the upstroke, and pressurizes the fuel system in the downstroke. Normally it wouldn't be possible to build pressure in the tank, but your tank vent seems to be clogged. The most popular theory at the moment is a clog, and I'm the only one shouting "air leak", so I could very well be wrong. But I can't help but be suspicious of that primer pump...or maybe one of the hoses/connections on either side of the prefilter.

But...

If there is a clog in the line from the tank to the prefilter, the primer pump could have a hard time drawing fuel in. This could force an air leak. Then the primer pump would pressurize the tank via the fuel return line because of the clogged vent. Hmm...

"If there is a clog in the line from the tank to the prefilter,"

If there is a clog which is hampering starting...then it won't run 80 with the same clog....

I second that assesment....any 240D that is able to get up to 80 doesn't have a fuel glog anywhere.

Do you have the original primer pump, or the newer improved replacement? The reason I ask is that it's about $15, works great, easily installed and nails a potential problem in that area for good.

Yeah, I was forgetting about that little piece of the puzzle. But I still suspect the primer pump
