I just posted this in the for sale section. This is as a favor to a fellow retiree.

I know a fellow retired military man (USAF) that has decided to part with his beloved 300CD he bought new while stationed in Germany and took delivery in US. The car has 113,000 miles and was always garaged. When I last saw it the car had no dents or dings and original paint that still shined. It's light green in color, with original factory floor mats and didn't have any rips in the leather. It has new Michelin tires just recently installed.

Now for the down side, the A/C doesn't work. I don't know why, but will check when I make a photo run for the car.

They are asking $9000, but that may be negotiable.

I would have bought this car in a heart beat, if my wife was working instead of going to college. I don't have any pictures and the owner is quite a bit older then me (I'm 60) and not into computers and the internet. The car is in Southern IL and if you are a serious prospect I will drive the 180 miles to their house to take pictures to email to you and/or post here.

One thing to understand, I am asking no commission from the owner or the buyer. I just want this car to find a good home where it will be properly cared for and not abused. The owners wanted me to screen the callers for this car, and I will do that the best I can.

PS: I have already checked with my local banker and I can have the money for the car, but it would leave us so tight as to really have to sell the Magnum or the Jetta. Since I had planned on giving the Magnum to our daughter within two years when I bought the Magnum, selling either car is not an option.

It was an excellent GTG, but no MB's showed up. They must have got mad cause I sold my 240D and bought a MB with a cheap Dodge body.

As he picked it up in Germany, is it US or Euro? Turbo? MAnual or Auto?

It was ordered in Europe and may be a Euro verison, it has the safty triangle mounted in trunk lid, but it was delivered to US and not driven in Europe. I think what happened was between long wait to be built and then being transfered back to states the car ended up being US delievered to POE Boston (?) after there were back in the states. This is a turbodiesel, as were all 300CD's (2dr coupe), with automatic and all factory options and they think the window sticker was about $40k to $42 for the car.

I told them they need to find all the papers, manuals, and service records for the buyer to have and that it is important and can make a difference in the selling price of the car. They think they have all the manuals and sales papers, but not sure about service records. Remember they are getting along in years and may have difficulty remembering where they put some old papers.

Having heard the car start and run, watched it drive off leaving our Jetta straining to keep up was a real supprise & pleasure. I was trying to buy this car about year and a half ago and finally gave up and bought a new car. I will say that I am just about sick because I have to pass on this car. This is second time recently that I have had to miss out on a really nice "garage queen" 300 turbodiesel and I am fit to be tied, but I guess that's life. Always a day late and a dollar short as my dad use to say.

I have been trying to remember if this car has Euro style head lights, I think it does but can't remember for sure. I may be wrong, but I think manual tranny in these cars (CD's) were extremely rare even in Europe.

Now for you new guys here, these CD's are not a good canidate for every day driving in the city. The body parts availability from door back are very hard to find and the seats are the same way. Front and back seats are not the same as in 123 4dr sedans, so replacement or repairs can be very expensive.

Myself I consider these 300CD's as true collector cars that should be driven only for special ocassions on Saturday or Sunday afternoon and not to school, the mall, or parking lot at work. But that's just my opinion.

The 300CD was a US (& Canada) model only. All euro delivery (not necessarily euro spec) cars had a trunk triangle as they could not legally be driven in Europe without them.

Sounds like a real find. Oh, to have some spare change laying around!

Yes that's what has my shorts in a twist, I haven't the cash flow at present and the thought of pinching pennys like we did when we first got married does not excite me.

When I bought my old 240D I had been looking for the coupe, but snapped up my second choice car instead because CD's were so few and far between and damned expensive. As an every day driver, I think I would prefer the 240D, due to lower buy price and upkeep cost. Still regret selling the 240D.

I went to check on two CD's but they were sold by the time I got to go look at them. One that the man still had in his garage while he waited for the $7000 personal check to clear. The car was white with a tan interior and was also a garage queen with 97,000 miles on the clock and everything worked including the CC, a/c and even the radio & clock.

Must be why I never read about or saw a CD as a row your own special.

Any idea if one intended for Euro delivery would have had the Euro style head lights or the US style lights?

I sure hope a member here buys this car so it will get a proper home.

I'm interested if the A/C problem can be resolved. I've got a nice coupe and a reliable as hell sedan neither of which I can use in the summer because of no A/C. I'm driving a MUCH worked on old Mazda 929 now because of this. The Mazda A/C is still R-12, never been opened or re-charged and this thing is 16 years old now. No matter how hot it is you will reach a point where you will want to turn down the cool, very sweet. I've been thinking to find a nice old 123 with fully functioning A/C, selling my other two and buying a small pick-up truck for backup. I know people would laugh at me regarding the importance of A/C in New England but try driving on RT128 during rush hour at 95+ degrees, very hi-end miserable. 'Course for 9 large I probably aught to take 2 of them and fix the AC in both my cars but that makes too much sense and I'm too old to start making sense now.

My guess is compressor or electrical problem, but it would have to be check further to be sure. The a/c on my 240D wasn't working when I bought it and it turned out that 3 o'rings were crimped when new compressor was installed and cost less then $75 for the repair at local dodge dealership which included using dye marker to spot any future leaks. I supect something like this may be the problem, and maybe it will turn out an easy fix.

I forgot to mention they do not want to do any trading. I already ask with hope of working out something with the owner, but they only want money in some form or the other.

I think it would have had US lights. While the crappy DOT lights are illegal in Europe for OE applications, I believe that variances are/can be granted to privately imported or "visiting" cars. Or something like that.
This sounds like exactly the car I hope to buy in a couple of years - a pristine, original #2 car for use as a long term keeper. There's just no way I could do it now. I sure hope a member here buys this car so it will get a proper home, and then decides to sell it in 2008.

Here are a couple of pictures of the car, but to see all I have please go here as I have reduced thier size and you can tell more about the car. I'm just putting up a couple to save band with on the forum.

There is some minor rust on the car, but it's not excessive. It does has a new set of Michelin Hydroedge tires. I talked to Mrs Nesmith today and I told her the asking price of $9000 was just too much and that the car would likely be a $5000 car to maybe a $7000 car if nothing serious is wrong with a/c such as the evap under the dash.

myself I would give $7k for the car if they had a few small things done and I could do a dye leak test on the a/c to determine if the leak was not under the dash. I bought my old '83 240D with the same a/c not working syndrome and it turned out it was 3 o'ring seals at hose conections and was fixed for less then a $100.
