Are you saying that the fan actually turns a different RPM or that it feels like it puts out different amounts of air ?

if i push the defrost button the fan runs much faster, or so it seems, than when i push the autohigh.
i thought about wiring up a direct wire on a switch (with a fuse) to run the fan as fast as possible when i have the A/C on. it gets cold enough (40F) but i just want it to push more air out. would wiring a direct line up damage the amplifier?

Is your fan making any noise? If so, the motor could be worn out and sticking. However, other than that, I'm not sure you want to do anything else or you might be replacing that motor soon.

the fan motor is in good shape. i took it out to see if it needed brushes or whatever and it is smooth with lots of torque and no play in the bushings.
just trying to find out what determines fan speed.
it cools reasonably well for the front seats but not so much cool air reaches the back seats.

Put your hand over the defrost vents. You're probably losing your air through there. A bad actuator may be your problem. The air sounds louder on defrost because it's all going through the defrost vents instead of being diverted through both.

ok, thanks. i never did check if the air is coming out the defrost while i had it on autohigh. i'll check that. then try to get to the right vacuum pod.
you could be right though, it just sounds louder than the air coming out the center vents.
i did know that on defrost the fan is supposed to come on full blast. it just doesn't seem like it on autohigh. it does put out air though. it's just hard to quantify how much in words here.

many thanks,
roberto
