240D Speedometer question

At 439,864 miles my speedometer stopped working. I know it's a 240 and I've rarely gone over the speed limit, but I hate that my odometer stopped working. For a few weeks the speedometer would bounce around and make a grinding noise. But then the car fixed itself and it was dead on balls accurate for months.... then nada.
I clicked on the 'FastLane' link to find a cable but there was also a transmitter listed. Can you tell which one failed, the cable or the transmitter? And my next question would be how difficult is the cable to replace?
The car is a 4 speed if that matters much.

sounds as if it could be the cable. should be fairly easy to check. unhook the speedo end and jack up the back of the car and spin the wheels. if the speedo drive end doesnt twist the cable is broken.
