Worth the swap?
So, as some of you know, I've been slowly working on swapping an 84 300SD engine into my 83 240D w/ manual tranny. It's been suggested that I also swap out the differentials. Gearing ratios are a little abstract to me - is the difference between the 3.06 (or was it 3.08..) and the stock diff for the 240 going to help me that much? The 84SD donor car is there - just trying to figure out if its worth the effort to pull both the diffs and put the SD one on. Thanks in advance for your help.

no question... swap the rears too. if you dont you will have a very fast diesel that gets about 15 mpg. and noisy at highway speeds. you will need to change the driveshaft too but the one in the sd wont work. i dont think. you will prob have to have one shortened.
when you finish you will have one sweet car. also you need to change the speedo. you dont say what year the sd is. the speedo will need to match the rear end ratio.

84...i
i see you did say it is an 84. i am not sure the speedos will interchange. you will also need to change the radiator and i am not sure the 84 is a direct inrerchange.
