Glowplug afterglow,how to disable??

From reading the many posts here I have learned my '98 E300TD keeps the glowplugs hot for awhile after starting, chiefly for emmissions.

Since my vehicle is emmissions exempt how would I disable this glowplug-consuming feature,is there a time delay relay somewhere?

What governs this glowplug life shortening feature and how can I "help"it?

Use a push button under the dash (using a solenoid) to activate the GPs and forget about the relay.
