Injector timing adjustment...

...using a "locking tool"? I heard someone mention that this is the prefered method of setting the timing on the injector pump. How does this work and where can I get the tool? Is this really better than the "drip method" or "bubble method" I've also heard about? Also, I've heard it's possible for the motor to run with the pump timing 180 degrees off but that it won't run very well. How can I tell if mine is like that? I'm fairly sure my pump has been replaced by the previous owner but the job was never finished (timing wasn't set, etc).

Sorry to ask so many questions but I'm not having much luck with the search engine and haven't really found much other than some dead links for Richard Easley's website on adjusting the timing.

Later IPs have a port to access a timing lug. The port is on the outboard side of the IP coverd by a plug with a 17mm head. If your IP has a plug, you can eyeball timing. You can check the position of the lug with an IP locking tool which is a device that engages the lug to hold the IP shaft against the case when you intall the IP at a prescribed cam position. You can probably do just as well with a mirror or a wood dowel (to take an impression of the lug) or a piece of wire (to feel for the lug).

I don't know that using the lug as a timing mark provides more accurate results than the drip method. Seems to me that unless the cam is timed spot on with the crank then +/- 1 degree of IP timing isn't going to make much difference.

Thanks! I'll try that.
