Old Diesel

A friend bought a farm and in the barn theres a 500 gallon tank almost full with diesel fuel the fuel is not off road and is clear in color. The fuel must be there at least 3 years as the previous owner died and this was an estate sale. My question is the fuel still good and how would I check. Very tempted to use it but I don't want to mess up my car.

It should be fine to use, to make sure it runs good, dump a bunch of BioBor or another Algecide in the tank to make sure there's no algea, and you could also dump a few oz of cetane booster into your tank each time you fill it up, diesel loses cetane value over time and this would bring it back up to spec. I'd say go for it, I have no doubt it'd run just fine.

I just bought 150 gallons of heating fuel from a guy for $75. I am assuming it's possible to use in a diesel, so I am going to put some in my 300SD. I added some diesel kleen into it. Anybody use this type of fuel in a car?

Heating fuel and diesel are the same exact thing....only the heating fuel has a red dye in it so that the cops can check for it in your car and then arrest/fine you.

From what I was told heating fuel has more sulpher than on road diesel.
And comes with a huge fine if your caught using it.

rdanz,

I used fuel oil that was over 10 years old in my MB Diesel and couldn't tell the difference from new fuel.

That tank of fuel is now worth about $1500. Use it.
