E420CDI coming out?

Friends:

I love my 79 SD and will keep it, but I'm feeling the need for new, if you know what I mean.

I hear the V6 engine will be coming out with more hp, torque, etc. and I'd hate to buy the last E320CDI and have the new ones come out the next week.

The dealer can't give me a straight answer... do any of you know the inside?? What's happpening?

I doubt if we'll see this on our side of the Atlantic.

Seems to me that diesels are rather on the "fringe" as far as US automotive culture is concerned. Even given that diesels are more fuel efficient than gassers, a lot of that efficiency is eaten up by the higher cost of diesel over gas.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question. I'd like to see an E420 CDI too...

This summer they replaced the engines in the sprinter's and E320Cdi's with the newer V6 engine that was in that marathon 100,000 mile durability test.....a while ago.......it does give quite a bit more power from what I've read...I want one.

i have heard

rumblings of the 420cdi to come here.

hope it is true.

hoping it wil be offered in a dodge magnum...with a six speed manual.

i will buy that!

An article at Germancarfans says the V8 E-Class CDI will do 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds. Motor Trend has the E320 CDI 0-60 at 6.5 seconds. So, how would the V8 be better? Other than the staggering torque rating the car's no quicker and returns lesser economy, and is overall way more expensive I would assume. Perhaps it would be a better match for an S-Class.

I thought the V8 Cdi S-class had a 5.6 second 0-60 time....thats what I read anyways....its supposed to come here once we get sulfur free fuel (next september, one year!!)

All in gearing, and the way individual tests are performed, I suppose. I believe the figures MB is publishing for later cars, post 98, are optimistic across the range.

For instance:
It is crap that the '97 E420 is .4 second slower than the identical output chassis of the E430 of '98. And there is no way in the world an E320 I6 is 6/10 ths slower than the V6. Those are large differences. The weight difference is completely negligible between cars and the gearing is exactly the same. Plus I have driven each model, back to back. You wouldn't be able to tell them apart(save for various interior improvements/accomadations).

The E320 CDI I6 is listed at 7.7 seconds 0-100 km/h in Europe. It has taller gearing, but only by less than 7%. 0-60 mph in the US is rated at 6.6 seconds. Never driven a CDI of any type, though. I DO know they can chirp their wheels from a dead stop under no boost conditions(personal eye witness).

And what's up with the new E350 4-valve being rated at only 18 city - 24 highway EPA mileage? It has the 7G-tronic, right? The M112 V6 was rated at 20 - 28, and it actually met those figures successfully(I know, I know, non-diesel related).

I wish buying an E320CDI was an option for me...but at those prices it isn't.

They need to bring a C200 CDI over here they sell in Europe...something more of us could afford.

I agree...the C200 series are awesome cars....especially the wagons...we had a C220 over there (6 speed stick) and it was awesome, you could squeal the tires on take off very easily if you had the traction control turned off And we topped it at 155mph.....while still getting about 23-24mpg!!!
