If I were still driving my 240D I wouldn't worry too much about running a mix of oils as someone called their "abyss," with two precautions:

First it MUST be filtered.

Second, it should NOT have brake fluid and DEFINITELY NOT have anti freeze in it. I would also prefer that it not have rear axle lube included.

Have a great day,

I envy you.

That is great news.
FYI:
ATF does not need thinning for cold weather until you hit -60F.

Just curious, before I start asking every tranny shop in my area for their fluids..

What do I need to filter the UTF with? Where can I buy the filters? Also, is it safe (after being filtered) to simply run my car on it.. or will this put strain on the engine parts / wear out equipment / run hotter? Sorry for the questions, it's just a little bit scary to think about this sort of thing, since she's my daily driver. Don't want to blow out injectors, or clog anything, and then not be able to go to work.

Thanks for these ideas, though!

Perfect for blending with my WVO ;)

Too late. I have done the running around already. :P and lay claim to all used ATF this and other side of whatever river.

Local Lube place has agreed to give me their used atf but he warned me that it will certainly contain other contaminants and unknown fluids mixed in.

I know what you mean, I've been running WVO blends in 617's for 2 years and I'm about to try it in my "new" and beautiful 602 92 300D 2.5

The filters you can get are at Mcmaster-Carr, I'd suggest 1 micron or less. It's your choice if you want the bag type or the in line cannister type. Bags just need gravity, in line spin on's need to be pumped through. I always suggest cleaning out the tank and then changing fuel filters before you start blending. Make sure your rubber fuel lines are in good shape too. I think UTF is going to be eaiser than WVO though. Really a no brainer. Filter and pour into tank, no worries about viscosity or temperature.
Start with 5 gallons of a 50/50 blend with diesel fuel if your worried. Setting up your space is very important.

At over $3.50 a gallon, that starts to add up. Sorry, too stinky.

Somewhere on this forum someone said they run 1 gal gas to 4 gal wvo.I was wondering how cold before he could not run that mixture.I know I will start looking for used trany fluid.

So many alternatives to the usual diesel-only in the fuel tank. My only problem is that I don't quite have the garage / yard space for the tanks of these fluids and for setting up filtrations, etc, and I also don't currently have the time to hunt down these other fluids. But I do have about 8 quarts of ATF sitting around so I guess I'll burn it all up over the weeks. :D

I ran a quart of ATF once insted of Power Service and I noticed a very slight drop in power. Some people swear by it but I didn't really notice a difference.

I had a couple quarts of Mobil 1 15w-50 sitting around and decided to burn them in the SD. I didn't notice any difference.

Some of you guys are really into blending these fuels.

That would be injector cleaner for 4 tankfuls in my book.:)
