How much used transmission fluid can/do you burn?

Who is mixing used trannie fluid with their diesel or K1 fuel. What is the max volume you have burned successfully.

I put in 2 qts/ tankful as I use it as an injector cleaner. I have heard 20% but YMMV.

Anyone know if trans synthetic trans fluid burns the same as dino and if trans fluid mixes w/ VO?

pawoSD 10-17-2005 09:38 AM

I am also interested in this, since in a few hours I'll have 6-7 qts to get rid of.... :D

I've run as high as 99% from a transmission shop. It loves ATF more then diesel.

Tell me more

rg2098's Avatar could you tell me how many tank fulls or miles you have run at 99 percent transmission fluid. I may be able to get a steady supply it would be nice to know I was not the first guinea pig to test running it full time? Any one with any opinion on running tranny fluid with some redline additive please do chime in.
Thanks
Dave S

Anyone try used ATF? I've only used new. Is filtering it enough?

pawoSD 10-17-2005 01:22 PM

Nevermind, I ended up draining into "the abyss" which is a giant tub of mixed oils I have. So there won't be any burning of it..."oh well"

Filter the oil mixture then burn it!

There's everything from lawnmower oil to Rotella T to Dexron to Brake fluid and Power Steering Fluid, even a few quarts of super dirty differential oil in "the abyss", so I think I'll just put it in bottles and bring it to autozone to dispose of. :D

Only one tank at 99% and it ran fine. ATF has better lubricating properties then diesel so I wouldn't run an additive, although it can't hurt. If you can get a steady supply do it, if you don't feel comfortable running a full tank blends are fine.

Ooh! I'd love to see how this works! There's a whole bunch of Transmission shops right down the road from me.. I'm sure they wouldn't mind free disposal of their fluids.

Only question I have, is how safe is this for the engine, say, with a 75% Trans, 25% Dino mix? I don't feel like pouring a few gallons of filtered, used transmission fluid, into my gas tank.. only to find out it corroded my fuel lines, clogged my injectors, or worse.. a few months later.

So uh, how well do I need to filter the stuff (as in, with what?).. and how safe is this?

ATF cokes injectors

Someone told me ATF cokes the injectors so it's not recommended.

pmari 10-18-2005 09:52 PM

I'm not too worried about coking injectors. I just don't want to gum up rings ,make scars in the cylinders or holes in pistons  I know she'll run on 100% UTO (used trannie fluid) just wondering whos running it all the time and whats the verdict?

If it was a type eight diesel, you could have coking.
I run 100% ATF, or used ATF any time I can get it.
Never any coking.
The engine runs quieter.
More power.
Roughly one MPG lower economy.

pmari 10-18-2005 11:25 PM

I was hoping you'ld chime in WHunter. I have seen you mention it before. My gasser indy has one of those transmission flush machines. Says he'll give me all I want, and it's filtered too!
