what is this white can?

I have a 85 300SD. There is a white can with an electrical plug on it next to the fuel tank.
What is it and what does it do? It is about 3 inches high and probably 4 or so round, and mounted on a bracket.

thanks
Doug

I have an '85 D with no can. Perhaps electric vac. pump? Does it also have a vac. hose on it?

Someday, I will have to get a digital camera. I do not have any pictures.

This can is mounted on a bracket on the drivers side of the car, Only a 4 wire plug to this can, no Vacuum hoses.

The car does not have a leveling system? or a factory alarm? these are the only things I can even imagin it might be.

1) unplug it and see what happens (or doesn't happen)

2) take it apart and reassemble it, be sure to end the operation with a few extra parts. Throw the extra parts in the "extra parts bin"

3) post results

Does it look like this under my rear seat?

If so, some suggested it is a tow sensor for the alarm system. It is not a vacuum pump, that is on the opposite side. BTW, mine was unplugged when I got the car.
