car smokes and uses a lot of fuel

Have a 85 300sd-got it off a guy that said it ran 6 months before. The IP was frozen up-replaced. Then started the car up and would smoke like mad, idle rough and no power. The fuel tank was full of water-replaced the filters. Ran a line from a 5 gal pail to the small fuel filter. Primed the lines and out the top of the big fuel filter. Started the car and it ran better than before but it still smoked like mad and not much power. The car ran-idle-ran 10 minutes and ran out of fuel. The return line was sill running into the fuel tank. But is 4-5 gal of fuel a lot to go through in 10 min. I also replaced the injectors. The smoke coming out the exhaust smells like diesel fuel not oil. So-if the ip is pumping to much fuel that would explain why it smokes so much. So how do you adjust how much fuel the IP pumps into the engine?

IP can't pump too much fuel at an idle because fuel is how it controls the speed. Possible that water got to your injectors and damaged the nozzle making it not spray the fuel properly. Small amount of water explodes when it hits the high temps of igniting fuel.

you are

not measuring the amount of fuel your engine is burning. you are measureing what it is burning plus what is being returned to the tank. dont worry about that til you get everything working as designed. clean out your tank if you know it to be dirty. if you arent sure siphon out some off the bottom and see what it looks like. if it is cloudy and looks like it has stuff in it you prob have a fungi prob. if so start by cleaning the tank with fungicide available from diesel farm or marine supply. if it looks clear you are good to go.

good luck

How did you time the injection pump? You must be pretty close to the correct setting or it will run very badly and smoke like crazy -- in fact, if you have it 180 degrees out it will run EXACTLY as you have described!

Correct timing is for the plunger to cover the intake slot in the #1 sleeve at 26 degrees BTDC -- set using a drip tube (do a search, it's been described several time) and you will probably be fine.

The lift pump will drain the tank if about 15 or 20 minutes, you are only burning a very small fraction of what the lift pump picks up -- the "extra" is returned to the tank via the overflow lines.

Are you new to diesels? If so, you may encounter a lot of information here that may be confusing.

Generally, if this engine had been known to run (and not smoke a lot prior) there may be several reasons, simple reasons, for excessive smoke and fuel usage!

Yes, get the water out! Second, replace the cannister fuel filter, not just the little in-line filter. Prime the system, pump the pump a gazillion time, yes it may require changing arms, and start with all of this first. Report back after you have done this, if you haven't got it going properly!

There are many people here who will guide you, but we need to start from ground up!
