IP oil change
Hey, I'm wanting to change the oil in the injector pump on my 220D and switch that over to synthetic.
I've found the oil level check plug on the side of the IP. (14mm bolt - that IS the check plug, right?) but I cannot find a drain plug? I'm pretty sure the car is old enough, 1971, that the IP has a seperate oil reservior. There is a drain plug on the IP, right? |

The main reason to change the oil on these older IP's was to eliminate the diesel fuel dilution that occurs over time. If I remember correctly, there is no drain plug, you could siphon or suck out the old stuff though.
Seems like I was told many years ago to drain the contents down to the check level plug then replace the plug and refill to above that point. Repeat a couple of times. This was very messy and a number of years ago on the old '68. Supposedly the new oil is more dense than the diluted old oil?!? With todays understanding of these devices, I would go with the syphon style removal of the old oil.

To drain
If your oil is to high or mixed with diesel loosen govern cover and raise slightly so that the fuel oil mixture can flow out that is from the manual. It just so happens I did it last night I would recomend getting something to suck it out it would have been a lot eiser.

Yeah, I removed that 14mm bolt, and a bunch came out. Kinda made me wonder if that wasn't a drain, and I'd missed the level plug!
I probably should try draining the governor assy because I'm sure with the amount that came out of the IP that there is going to be some in there. I don't think siphoning that out would work because of the diaphragm, unless I siphoned through the vac line connection. Have to find a small diameter siphon hose I guess. hmmm... I think I'll try siphoning the IP reservoir as well. I'd rather not flush it like that with Mobil 1. That'd get pretty 'spensive! |

ip lubrication
dave is correct,
loosening the plate just enough to let the old lubricant out. tighten and refill with new oil. the bolt should be taken out / loosened to indicate the correct fill level. |
