What is the aux water pump for?

as far as i understand it, the auxilliary water pump is designed to circulate more coolant to the heater core at low rpm, idle for instance. i seem to have low heat output at idle, so i am trying to find out why.
thanks for the tips on location, i got it now.

Hey scott,
You can follow a coolant line (seemingly) coming out of the intake manifold in between cyls 5 & 6, which goes straight down into the aux coolant pump. Mine was malfunctioning as well. I tested it by just wiring it up to the battery and it didn't spin. I took the motor part apart (don't try to take the impeller off the shaft, I broke a vane off of mine ). The motor was filled with gunk and the brushes were pretty corroded. I cleaned it all up, sanded the commutator, put it back together and it worked beautifully. There is hope!
