Banging sound in rear?????

Good day guys,

I'm a bit embaressed about this question. I know the 123 pretty well, but this has me stumped. I get from time to time a banging sound which sounds a bit like my exhuast is hanging and banging, but I cant find anything loose. It doesnt happen much but when it does, its loud........ any thoughts

Have you checked your center drive shaft support recently?

did you check

your half shafts? could be loose.

shocks? the tops sometimes are loose and bang. it is difficult to diagnose because the tops are buried under the seat.

I had a car do that. The exhaust had shifted and was banging against the body. It made a terrible and very loud noise and took me forever to find it.

I think you will find that your sway bar links on the rear needs to be replaced...often you only hear the noise at low speeds when you hit a bump.

Exhaust & engine mounts

It will be your exhaust more than likely - check for up and down not just side to side - the front engine mounts can have completely split but look OK until you jack the engine up. Also check self levelling units for movement...

Replace the sway bar links. About $10 each. Easy to do. Mine sounded like I had a load of scrap iron in the trunk when I drove slowly on a rough road or over a speed bump. I also thought something was loose or worn out shock or muffler mounts. This is one fix that you will give you that happy DIY feeling. Let us know what happens.
