98 E300 Boost Adjustment?
Hey Guys,
I finally registered with the forum because I have a question that I have not found an answer to on already posted threads. I'd first like to say that its good to be here and I look forward to continue posting in the future, and help out whenever I can with other members. Here goes- I purchased a 1998 E300 TD about 4 months ago, and after a few initial problems (radiator leak and fuel pump seals) I have finally decided to tune it up. I just paid for the “custom” tuning from Oliver over at SpeedTuningUSA and would like to adjust the boost on the car to keep the smoke down and take advantage of the extra fuel. So… how do I adjust the waste gate on the turbo to allow the turbo to spool faster and create more boost without blowing my intercooler tubes from over boost (as I’ve already done numerous times on my Cummins Dodge). I know with a fueling and timing box I should have a boost and EGT gauge, but Oliver has assured me that the power increase (50 hp and 95 Nm) is not too aggressive, and that my engine would not even require the boost adjustment, they just recommend it. Looking forward to an answer, I’ll be sending in the ECM tomorrow! -Ryan, Bay Area, CA 1998 E300TD, 1991 300TD, 1999 Dodge Cummins (with way too many mods… you may have seen it in the TDR magazine) |

Got The Box!
Well I got the new computer this weekend, and have already put about 500 miles on it (I have a heck of a commute to school!). So far I have been really happy... great power... transmission doesn't seem to have any issues (209k miles and counting)... and the car seems to idle a lot smoother and quieter. It really surprised me at first at how fast the rpm's rise from a stop between shifts.
The only questionable thing I have seen is that the temperature seems to run a little warmer. Usually is stays a hair lower than 80 degrees C, and now its noticeably above (I'd say about 87 to 89 degrees C, but I wear glasses, and the gauge is not linear). I think I remember reading about this anomaly from other posts. Anyway, I'm ready to adjust the boost to keep my smoke levels down now, and am still waiting to hear if anyone has any input on how to do it. I figured I'd start monkeying with the waste gate this weekend or next, but since I don't have a boost gauge, I don't really know if I am going to do any good (other then just watching for the smoke level to drop). I'm looking forward to any input... does anyone even know if I will trip a trouble code if I disconnect the waste gate? Is there such thing as an over boost code like on the Cummins'???

Aklim,
Do you have the custom SpeedTuningUSA program on your E300? Do you feel comfortable driving it without a boost adjustment?
